Rain Ends Brewerton Speedway Program Early; Zacharias and Mackey Score Feature Wins
COLUMN BY: Robert Kenney Jr. / BREWERTON SPEEDWAY – CENTRAL SQUARE, NY – Despite threatening skies throughout the evening, fans were treated to exciting racing Friday night at Brewerton Speedway as the track hosted the Haun Welding Supply-sponsored program featuring the Tracey Road DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds, AmeriCU Credit Union STARS Mod Lites, Dot Foods DIRTcar Sportsman, and Mirabito DIRTcar 4-Cylinders.
The AmeriCU Credit Union STARS Mod Lites completed their feature before the weather arrived, and it was Thomas Mackey who put together a strong run and held off a determined Zack Babcock during the closing laps to secure the feature victory. Babcock kept the pressure on throughout the final circuits, but Mackey remained smooth and consistent to claim the win. Becoming the 4th different winner in the Mod Lite division in 4 races.
The Tracey Road DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds took center stage next, with Jimmy Witko Jr. jumping out to the early lead from the pole position. Witko paced the field for several laps as drivers battled throughout the pack on the fast Brewerton Speedway surface. Dylan Zacharias worked his way to the front from 6th starting position and took command as the race progressed, positioning himself perfectly before Mother Nature intervened.
As the field completed lap 24, heavy rain and strong winds swept across the speedway, forcing officials to bring the event to an early conclusion. With the race past the halfway point, the event was declared official, giving Zacharias the victory in the rain-shortened 24-lap feature.
The weather prevented the completion of the Dot Foods DIRTcar Sportsman and Mirabito DIRTcar 4-Cylinder Superstock feature events. Speedway officials announced those features will be made up at a later date, with the makeup date expected to be announced later this week.
While the weather cut the night short, fans were still treated to competitive racing before the storm rolled into Central New York.
