Can Am Fan Appreciation Night Belongs to Webb, Rogers, Symonds, Stevenson and Hennessy

COLUMN BY: Tim Baltz / CAN AM SPEEDWAY – LA FARGEVILLE, NY  – It was fan appreciation night this past Friday at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York. Five classes of competition made for some exciting racing on the night. 

Mason Rogers was once again the driver to beat in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman Friday night. Rogers took over the top spot on lap 2 from leader Kayden Howard and would march on unchallenged in the 15 lap event to score his 4th win of the season and 8th career win in the division, good for 3rd on the Limited Sportsman win list. Last weeks winner Mike Durham charged to 2nd at the line with Howard crossing in third. Rhylan Poole and Cayden Graham completed the top 5.

The Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature saw plenty of cautions for minor spins early on. Once the racing resumed, Jock Symonds jumped out front of early race leader Jared Gilson in the 15 lap event. Gilson kept pace with the leader for the entire event, but on this night it was 6 wins in 7 tries and 5 in a row for Symonds this season and 17th of his career in the Thundercar division. Gilson crossed in second ahead of Colin Bauter, Noah Williams, David Rasmussen and Colby Hibbard.

Derek Webb was the driver to beat in the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modified 25 lap feature. Webb started up front and drove away from the field in the early laps with Shaun Shaw and Dan Bechard giving chase. Webb and Shaw both drove away from the field while behind them last weeks winner Billy Dunn was charging forward, breaking into the top 5 by lap 13 from 8th starting spot. Up front Webb built up over a straight lead while Shaw did all he could to keep the leader in sight. With the top 2 drivers well ahead Dunn was continuing his march forward as he got around Bechard for 3rd, but had a long way to go to catch Webb. Over the finals laps Derek Webb was perfect and would end a two year winless drought at Can Am, to record win number 1 of the season with Shaun Shaw second. Billy Dunn would have to wait another week to try and break Pat O’Brien’s win record with a third place effort. Remington Hamm and Jackson Gill completed the top 5.

In the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature Paul DeRuyter led early with Trevor Gibbons right there to challenge. A quick yellow bunched up the field giving Gibbons a chance at the leader. On the restart Gibbons was able to take the lead away while Owen Nier charged to the runner up spot. These two drivers would pull away and put on a great battle for the lead but Keegan Nier was also on the move taking away the third spot on lap 10, but had some work to do to catch the top two. As the laps wound down Tyler Stevenson started to make his way forward, climbing to the number 4 spot on lap 11. The caution that Stevenson and others needed flew on lap 14 for Caleb Howard, who stopped in turn 3 and 4. On the final restart Tyler Stevenson made his way to second, then tracked down Trevor Gibbons for the lead. On lap 16 Stevenson charged by on the top side in turn 4 to grab the lead. Stevenson would pull away from the rest of the field to record win number two on the year and 10th of his Can Am career. Trevor Gibbons ran a strong second with Keegan Nier, Owen Nier and Gavin Eisele the top 5.

Patrick Nolan led the early laps of the 20 lap Panther Frameworx Crate Sprints, but veteran Anthony Fiorentino was closing quickly. On lap 5 Fiorentino took the lead and began to drive away from the field, building up over a straight away lead. Fiorentino had not won at the speedway, since winning a Sportsman feature on August 10th of 2002 and was in perfect position to end that drought, but Andrew Hennessy was on the move to the front. After blowing a motor last week, Hennessy made his way to second around Will Fisher and Patrick Nolan, but had a long way to catch the leader. Fiorentino encountered lapped traffic on lap 14 allowing Hennessy to close in. On lap 15 the yellow flew for Rachel Zacharias, setting up the opportunity Hennessy was looking for. On the final restart Andrew Hennessy took the lead and would check out, to score his 2nd win in three weeks and 9th of his Can Am career. Former Sportsman track champion Josh VanBrocklin charged to second, with Anthony Fiorentino, Josh Verne Jr. and Mark Webb making up the top 5.

Next week the Dirt Modified Nostalgia Tour will be on hand for their one and only appearance. It’ll also be a full show for the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman, Panther Frameworx Crate Sprints and Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman. Sundance Leisure Thundercars have the night off. Racing begins at 7pm.
