Dunn Ties Can-Am Record, Sibley Breaks Through for First Career Victory

COLUMN BY: Tim Baltz / CAN AM SPEEDWAY – LA FARGEVILLE, NY  – After a week of bitter cold temperatures, rain and high winds, the drivers at Can-Am Speedway were met with great weather finally, which made for great track conditions and close racing all night.

In the 15 lap Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman feature, Hayden Howard jumped into the lead, but that was short lived as he broke while in front off turn 4. When the green flew Mike Durham took over the top spot as Brianna Murtaugh and Mason Rogers tried to move in. The top three had a great battle for position as Rogers moved to second and tried to catch the leader. Over the final laps Mike Durham ran some of his best laps all year long and would hold off a determined Mason Rogers for his 2nd win in the last three weeks. Mason Rogers crossed in second ahead of Brianna Murtaugh, Cayden Graham Jason Rarick and Joseph Fargo.

The Panther Frameworx 20 lap Crate Sprint Car feature saw a pair of scary moments at the start as Patrick Nolan caught the turn 4 wall and flipped causing the first red flag on the night. Nolan would climb out frustrated but unhurt. On the next restart it was trouble for Will Fisher and Tucker Donath in turns 1 and 2 as both drivers tangled, sending Donath flipping many times in the corner and the red flag flew again. Donath and Fisher would both be uninjured in the crash. Once the race settled down Adam Turner was the driver in charge with Josh Verne Jr. and former Sportsman track champion Josh VanBrocklin closing in. On lap 5 Verne would move by to take over the top spot and start to drive away. On lap 10 the yellow flew as Andrew Hennessy lost a motor in turn three ending his great run. When the green returned Verne was in a league of his own as VanBrocklin continued to try and run down the leader in second, while George Sanford moved to the third spot. Over the final laps however, Josh Verne Jr. was dominant and would pull away to nearly a 4 second lead at the finish to record his 4th win of 2026 and 22nd of his Can Am career. Josh VanBrocklin, Ken Klinkowsky, George Sanford and Chris Nethers completed the top 5.

The Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modifieds saw a historic moment at the finish, but at the start Preston Forbes was out front with Lance Willix right there to challenge. On lap 9 Willix would take over the lead and start to open up a slight advantage, with Forbes still within striking distance. Billy Dunn was on the move and would drive by Forbes to pick up the second spot in pursuit of the leader. As the laps clicked off Willix and Dunn were well out front with Forbes running a strong third, while Remington Hamm and Shaun Shaw had their own battles going on in the top 5. Up front however Willix looked well on his way to the win but the yellow few on lap 21 for Scott Webb who slowed with a problem on the back stretch. On the restart Dunn would move by Willix as Forbes made a bid for the runner up spot, but a quick yellow bunched the field up again for one more restart. When the green flew for the final time, Dunn would get a great launch and pull away from the field as Preston Forbes took over the runner up spot. Over the final laps Billy Dunn put it on auto-pilot to record a historic third win of the season but more importantly, would tie Hall of Famer Pat O’Brien on the all time win list in the Modified ranks at Can Am, with his 73rd career win. Preston Forbes held off Lance Willix for second while Tim Fuller and Shaun Shaw rounded out the top 5.

The 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature saw Brady Howard take the lead with Caleb Howard and Justin Gadbaw making up the top 3 early on.  Brady Howard had a fast race car and was pulling away from the field building up a big lead, as the rest of the field tried to keep pace. Frank Sibley was on the move from the 8th spot as he took over the runner up position from Caleb Howard before halfway, but had work to do to catch the leader. Without many caution flags Frank Sibley was running as hard as he could go but Brady Howard remained in control and seemed destined for his first career win, but behind them Gavin Eisele was charging forward, getting to fourth with three laps to go. On lap 18 Trevor Gibbons slowed on the back stretch, setting up a great finish. When the green flew Gavin Eisele made a three wide bid for the lead, but a quick yellow flew for Caleb Howard, who slowed in turn 4 bunching the field up once again. The green came back out and Sibley charged for the lead but Tyler Stevenson had problems in turns 1 and 2 and the yellow flew again. On the final restart Frank Sibley used the top side in turns 1 and 2 to grab the lead while Eisele took second from Howard. After many years of trying Frank Sibley finally accomplished a long time goal, with his first career win Sportsman win after a successful asphalt career. Gavin Eisele settled for second over Keegan Nier, Brady Howard and Owen Nier.

Kevin Greenfield led early in the 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature with David Rasmussen and Jock Symonds trying to close the gap. Symonds, who has been on a roll in this division this year, moved by Rasmussen for the runner up spot and began his pursuit of the leader. Just before halfway Symonds took over the lead but Greenfield was right there to challenge with Jared Gilson trying to keep pace in third. On lap 9 the yellow flew as OJ White slowed with a problem in turns one and two, forcing a length yellow to clean up fluid from his car. On the final restart Jock Symonds played it perfect as he pulled away from the field to record his fourth in a row and 5th of the season. Greenfield settled for second ahead of Jared Gilson, Noah Williams and Colby Hibbard.

A special 6 lap Mechanics Race was held following the regular card of racing on this night. Dave Rogers would win driving a Crate Sprint car. While Mike Greenfield would win the Thundercar portion in the Battle of the Mechanics.

Next week it is Fan Appreciation Night at the speedway with a regular show in all five divisions. Gates open at 5 with racing starting at 7pm.
