Lehner Storms To Victory At Albany-Saratoga

The win was the Saratoga Springs, New York rising star’s sixth at the track and second of the season. He also became the first repeat winner of the season.

C.G. Morey and Rich Ronca led the stout field of DIRTcar Modifieds to the green flag with third place starter Andrew Buff taking the early lead. Morey settled in second with Ronnie Johnson third. With Morey using the outside line, Johnson went low and took over the runner up position.

By lap five Morey came back and began to battle Johnson for the number two position. Meanwhile last weeks feature winner Justin Stone was in the middle of a battle with Mike Mahaney for the fourth position.

As the race reached the ten-lap mark, Buff had a near straight-a-way advantage over Morey, Johnson, Stone and Mahaney.

Stone though was on the charge. The third-generation driver out of Vermont took third from Johnson on lap 11 and quickly closed on Morey.

At the halfway point Buff’s advantage was more than a straight-a-way over new second place driver Mahaney.

Buff’s big lead went away on lap 20 when Ronca slowed on the backstretch.

On the restart Buff would hold the lead but Jack Lehner was right there to challenge for the lead with Mahaney close behind in second. Lehner led lap 22 and took control a lap later. DIRTcar Modified rookie Buff battled back on the outside but could not regain the lead.

With the race reaching the lap 28 mark, the leading trio of Lehner, Buff and Mahaney had pulled away from fourth place Stone and new fifth place runner Demetrios Drellos.

On lap 33 Mahaney took over the second position from Buff but Lehner was too far gone. Lehner picked up the win with Mahaney second, Stone third, Drellos fourth and Buff fifth. Heat races for the 24-car field were won by Mahaney, Matt DeLorenzo and Don Ronca.

Chris Crane, Jr., won the 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman feature event. Thomas VanVorst powered to the early lead in the 25-lap feature event. By lap eight though rookie Jordan Hill started to close in and pressure him for the top spot. With the remainder of the field two and three wide all the way to the tail, the duo began to open a gap between themselves and the rest of the field.

With ten laps to go Cam VanZandt broke free from the rest of the pack and slowly closed in on VanVorst and Hill. The caution flag waved on lap 18 for Scott Bennett, Jr. and Taylor Wason who each slowed on the track.

On the restart the top three remained the same. When they reached lap 20 though both Crane brothers made a charge. Chris Crane, Jr. took third with his brother Connor following. Crane, using the extreme outside “Crane Lane” took over the lead on lap 23.

In the end no one could catch Chris Crane, Jr. The elder of the Crane brothers brought home the win with Connor Crane second, VanVorst third, Hill fourth and VanZandt fifth. With 37 drivers pit side, heat races were won by VanVorst, Chris Crane, Jr., Hill and VanZandt. The Last Chance Qualifier went to Wason.

Chuck Dumblewski won the 25-lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event.  Dumblewski took the lead on a lap 24 restart and led the rest of the way for the win. Jaxson Ryan finished second with P.J. Cram third, Rob Yetman fourth and Kyle Hoard fifth. Dumblewski and Brandon Emigh won the heat races with the Four States Enterprises Dash went to Rich Crane.

Alex Smith won the 20-lap Limited Sportsman feature event. Smith held off Colton Emigh to bring home his second win of the season. Emigh finished second with points leader William Lussier, Jr. third, Sloan Cherko fourth and Derrik Emigh fifth. Heat race wins for the 24 drivers on hand went to Sarah Arnold, Derek Emigh and Walter Cook.

Chris Murray won the 20-lap Street Stock feature event. Murray took the lead late in the event and brought home the win over Damian Ward, Andrew Fitzgerald, Jeff Meltz and Gary O’Brien.

Josh Ramsey won the 15 lap DIRTcar 4 Cylinder feature event. Ramsey, the first Dual Cam car across the line, picked up the win over John Mason, Josh Reome, Chris Duffney, Jr. (First Single Cam) and Ben Ladd.

Chris Murray won the 20-lap XTREME DIRTcar DMA Midget feature event. Murray started his charge at the drop of the green and did not stop until the checkered flag. Murray picked up the win over Brandon Piastka, Matt Tanner, Will Hull and Daniel Piastka. Qualifying events were won by Anthony Marvuglio and Daniel Piastka.

The Albany-Saratoga Speedway returns to action on Friday, June 12th with all weekly divisions in action plus the Sprint Cars of New England Series (SCONE). Pit gates open at 3pm, grandstand gates open at 5pm with hot laps rolling off at 6pm. Racing is set to begin at 7pm.
