Stewart Friesen dominates the O’Canada 75 at Cornwall Motor Speedway!
COLUMN BY: Martin Belanger CORNWALL MOTOR SPEEDWAY – CORNWALL, ON – The O’Canada 75 for the Super DIRTcar Series highlighted the action on Hellmann Poultry Night, alongside the DIRTcar Pro-Stock Series and the Battle for a Cure Mini-Stock Series.
The O’Canada 75 saw Kevin Hamel jump out to the early lead, with Stewart Friesen quickly settling into second and Michael Parent running third. The first caution flew on lap 7 when Matt Caprara slowed on the speedway. Friesen wasted little time taking the lead on the restart, while Hamel and Parent battled intensely for the runner-up position. Another caution came on lap 15 when Justin Cyr came to a stop in Turn 4. Friesen remained in command on the restart as Mat Williamson climbed into third. The race was red-flagged on lap 24 after Mike Trautschold made heavy contact with the backstretch wall. Once racing resumed, Friesen continued to control the pace while Alex Yankowski advanced into third. Williamson eventually moved past Parent for second on lap 48, but Yankowski answered one lap later before completing the pass on Williamson with 21 laps remaining. Friesen encountered heavy lapped traffic during the closing stages but never relinquished the lead, driving to the victory. Yankowski finished second, while Alex Payne charged into third during the closing laps. Williamson and Hamel rounded out the top five.
The DIRTcar Pro-Stock Series feature began with Jean-Philippe Guay leading the opening laps before an early caution on lap 3 for Zach Sorrentino. Tyler Bushey grabbed the lead on the restart with Tommy Lizotte moving into second and Burton Ward running third. Following another restart on lap 6, Lizotte powered to the front while Bastien Caron settled into second. Several cautions slowed the pace before Caron took over the lead around lap 20, ahead of Lizotte and DIRTcar Pro-Stock Series points leader Pete Stefanski. Sid Harmer Jr. entered the battle for the lead during the second half of the race. Lizotte briefly regained the top spot before spinning in Turn 4 on lap 26, collecting Stefanski and bringing out another caution. Caron inherited the lead once again ahead of Bushey and Harmer Jr., then held off the field over the remaining laps to earn the victory.
The Alexandria Home Hardware Pro-Stock had a second feature tonight with Burton Ward taking the lead over Tyler Bushey and Bastien Caron. Caution was out on lap 12. On the restart, Ward stayed first as Caron and Dakota Sharp exchanged the second spot. The top 3 drivers were running strong together with Sharp taking the lead with 7 laps to go. Sharp led the final laps to win his first feature of the year over Caron and Ward.
The Battle for a Cure Mini-Stock feature went green with Sebastien Raymond Beauregard taking the lead over CJ Lavair and Travis Lamarche. Raymond Beauregard led the first 4 laps when caution came out. On the restart, Beauregard kept the lead with Antoine Dumouchel moving to second and Pierre Picard in third. Yellow was out on lap 11. Dumouchel lost his lead having issues with his car with only 8 laps to go, giving back the lead to Beauregard. On the restart, Picard used the outside lane to take the lead with another caution slowing the field. A final 5-lap dash that saw Picard leading the way and grabbing the $1,000 paycheck !
