Story By: SHAWN MILLER / MUCCI MOTORSPORTS – DUNDEE, NY – Joe Trenca tied his career-best finish with a runner-up result last Friday at Outlaw Speedway.
The Mucci Motorsports team kicked off the Patriot Sprint Tour and Empire Super Sprints show by maneuvering from sixth to third place in a heat race, which earned Trenca a spot in the dash as the driver with the fourth-most points earned.
He then finished where he started – fourth – in the dash to start the main event on the outside of the second row.
“I told my guys we put ourselves in a good position and we needed to capitalize,” he said. “To some extent we did capitalize on it. The leader was really good. He was great in clean air and we had so many cautions we didn’t get into heavy, heavy traffic.”
Trenca dropped a few positions early in the race before charging toward the front.
“We fell back to about eighth in the first few laps,” he said. “Once we got fuel burned off we were good. We kept picking them off. I got to second around Lap 20 and we had an open red. We added fuel and adjusted air pressure. I had two shots on a restart, but the leader was too good. The track was really fast around the top and I didn’t have enough to slide him.”
Trenca’s second-place finish was his third top five of the season. It also gives him six top 10s at Outlaw Speedway in six career races.
“We started off the year really good and then we hit a slump,” he said. “I went back to last year’s notes when we ran really good at the end of the year. We picked up speed immediately and last weekend we got a lot better.”
Trenca will take this weekend off before resuming action on Oct. 7 at Fulton Speedway in Fulton, N.Y., with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
