Column By: ROBERT SYMONDS / RACE PRO WEEKLY – WOODHULL, NY – As the warm weather begins to arrive in the Southern Tier of New York and the summer days near, excitement is in the air of fans and drivers who anxiously await the race season to start at the Woodhull Raceway. But first, we must get a taste of the season will offer as the Arnot Mall hosts the Woodhull Raceway for its annual Swarthout Recycling Woodhull Raceway Mall Show.
Saturday March 16th and Sunday March 17th, drivers will have their 2019 cars on display for returning fans and newcomers to see and get a feel of what their favorite drivers experience week in and week out at the race track. On Saturday afternoon at 2pm, fans will be able to see a different type of race as volunteered crews will battle it out in a Pit Stop Competition. Crews will be timed in changing the right rear tire of an Insinger Performance Modified that will be raced weekly at the Woodhull Raceway. The top 3 teams will be receiving prizes plus an award for the Best Appearing Team.
New to the Mall Show this year will be an Autograph Session beginning at noon. Woodhull Drivers and some of the Inaugural Woodhull Raceway Hall of Fame Inductees will be signing autographs for fans of all ages! Also anyone who is looking to purchase Season Passes or Reserved Seating can do so at the mall show as well.
Though the Mall Show is just a taste, you can see action at the Woodhull Raceway all season long beginning with the Season Opener on Saturday April 20th. The RUSH Late Models will be competing for $1000 to win in a 30 lap season lid lifter. Along with the Crate Late Models will be the Crate Sportsman Modifieds, Street Stocks (as they compete in their first Challenge race), Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, FWD, and Warriors. The season opener presented by Close Racing Supply as they have a proud supporter of the Late Model division for a decade. If that Season Opener isn’t enough for you, that next week April 27th, the Insinger Performance Modifieds will take center stage on the high banks.
The Woodhull Raceway keeps coming back with the best favorites of all the drivers and fans including the Patriot Sprint Tour for THREE times this year May 11th, July 13th, and August 24th. The King of the Bull Ring competitions also return in 2019 for the Crate Late Models, Crate Sportsman, and Street Stocks. Though who can’t forget The Jake Davis Memorial King of the Bull Ring, it is August 3rd this year.
Four big name memorial races are cemented into the Woodhull Raceway schedule this season. The George Williams Memorial will have an added bonus for the Modifieds on May 25th as they compete for 35 Laps and is $2,000 to win. Scott Dennison’s Memorial Race will feature the Street Stocks racing for 35 Laps as well, taking place on June 1st. One of the more attracted races for fans throughout the region, the Jim Williams Memorial on June 29th will host Jim Williams’s favorite.. a HUGE Fireworks display. (Honestly the best I have ever seen!)
After naming three of the four, could you name the fourth and final memorial? The Lyle Sherwood Memorial hosted on September 14th will have a coveted $1,717 to win Big Block/Small Block Modified race along with even more classes including Crate Sportsman, Crate Late Models, and Open Street Stocks.
If that isn’t enough to get you pumped for the 2019 season at Woodhull, just wait until August 13th. The Short Track Super Series will be at the Woodhull Raceway for their 5th Consecutive Tour Race where the winner will be taking home $5,500 in the Hustlin The High Banks 55. The Modifieds play host and are followed by the Short Track Super Series 602 Crate Sportsmans in a 25 lap $1000 to win race. Also on tap is the Street Stocks in their 2nd Challenge race of the season.
Throughout the season, more of your favorites are sprinkled in. These favorites maybe the 2nd Hall of Fame Class that will be inducted into Woodhull Raceway’s new Hall of Fame. The 270 Micro Sprints could also be your favorite, they will be at the Woodhull Raceway on August 17th. Coming at the end of September for the final race of the season will be the Full Fender Night which includes the Street Stock Woodhull 100 (Final Challenge Race), the Hobby Stocks in a 30 Lap event, Crate Sportsmans, Crate Late Models, and Open 4 cylinder classes.
If you’re not really into circle track racing, Woodhull Raceway also hosts the Lucas Oil Tractor Pull on Saturday July 27th and the New York State Horse Pulling Association on September 21st. Plus don’t forget EMS/Fire/Law Enforcement Night and Armed Forces Night where we salute those who put their lives on the line to save others in need.
Kids and fans will once again enjoy the three power wheel races this season along with the 2nd Annual Bed Sheet Banner Competition, the Christmas in July Bicycle Giveaway, and the Back To School Back Pack Giveaway. The season all ends on December 7th when the Woodhull Raceway will celebrate the season for their Annual Awards Banquet at the Watson Homestead in Painted Post.
