Story By: ROBERT SYMONDS / RPW – WOODHULL, NY – On yet another rain threatened night in the Southern Tier of NY, Ted and Brandi White kept the race status to green as the weather decided to improve for race conditions. With 119 cars packing the pit area, it was sure to be a good night on the highbanks.
Out of the 119 cars, 21 of them were Insinger Performance Big Block/Small Block Modifieds. Winning heat race events was Bobby Davis, Art Goodier, and Brandon Martin to set the field for their 25 lap feature event. Donnie Lawson started outside pole and quickly took the lead from Dayton Brewer on the outside groove off turn 2.
Lawson would continue to lead for the first three laps while Brian Doolittle and Billy Van Pelt, who came from their 3rd and 6th starting position, were right behind following Lawson. Yellow would fly on lap 3 as Sheldon Gardner spins in turn 2. Donnie Lawson restarted the race with 22 laps to go but it would only take 1 more set of corners before Van Pelt would make a move.
Billy Van Pelt went to the topside of turn 2, took the lead on lap 4 away from Lawson. Doolittle ended up getting by Lawson for second a few laps later. Though Doolittle had a fast car in Van Pelts former ride, it wouldn’t be enough for him to catch Billy The Kid Van Pelt as he won the Season Opener.
