Story By: PAUL SZMAL / FREEDOM MOTORSPORTS PARK – DELEVAN, NY – The Zimmers Service Center United Late Model Series (ULMS) will make its second of three appearances at Freedom Motorsports Park on Friday, July 5th as part of the ULMS ‘Speedweek’ series of races.
The $3000 to win main event will be in honor and memory of the Medal of Honor recipient and Scio NY native USMC Cpl. Jason Dunham.
In a normal checkpoint in Karabilah, Iraq, an insurgent leaped out and attacked Cpl. Dunham. During their struggle, he saw the insurgent release a grenade. Cpl. Dunham immediately then alerted his fellow Marines to the threat. Without hesitation, Cpl. Dunham covered the grenade with his helmet and body. He absorbed the brunt of the explosion and shielded his Marines from the blast.
In an ultimate and selfless act of bravery, in which he was mortally wounded, he saved the lives of at least two fellow Marines. He died eight days later from his wounds. USMC Corporal Jason Dunham is a True American Hero that will never be forgotten by the race fans and family of the Dunham family in western New York.
In the previous round of ULMS action at Freedom, Dave Scott held off a late race challenge from Chub Frank and Dave Hess to take the victory. Max Blair currently leads the ULMS points as they get ready to kick off their ‘Speedweek’ events at the Old Bradford Speedway on June 30th.
The regular Freedom divisions will join the ULMS program, with the DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Bandits on the card. Racing will begin at 7:30 p.m.
