Story By: KENNY SHUPP / OUTLAW SPEEDWAY – DUNDEE, NY – Just as cars were reporting onto the speedway for their hot lap activities a brief shower passed over the Outlaw Speedway and with that pushed the start time back almost 2 hours as necessary track preparations were made. Throw in the scheduled largest fireworks program in the Finger Lakes Region of New York and the track management knew they were in for a tough uphill battle. The decision was then made to push as many heats and features as possible and end the show at the 1am curfew.
The $12,000 Fireworks Extravaganza was presented in its entirety, all the qualifying heats were tucked into the books and 3 of the 7 scheduled features were hammered out prior to the 1 am cut off time.
Twenty –one Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modifieds roared to the opening green flag as a pair of second generation pilots in Eldon Payne and Billy Paine brought the field to the start of the 30 lap feature. Eldon Payne was able to lean on his many years of Modified experience and stayed at the top of the class throughout the entire distance and drove home in style for his first win at Outlaw Speedway in 2019. Kyle Coffey lined up in the lucky number thirteenth starting spot and drove a masterful race to claim the runner up spot as the pilot of the Sweeteners Plus machine continues to show steady improvement. Like Coffey, The Doctor, Danny Johnson started mid-pack and after a lap one incident that sent him to the rear of the field, Johnson was able to shake some of the gremlins that have plagued the Tyler Siri owned 27j machine throughout the “19” season, put on the drive of the night and came home for third at the finished followed across the line by AJ Slideways, Alan Johnson as Boss Man, Tyler Siri rounded the top five finishers.
Current high point contenders, Matt Sheppard and Steve Paine were both involved in a race related incident and finished well back in the pack with Sheppard scored in eleventh and Paine one spot behind in the twelfth finishing position.
Qualifying heats went to Payne, Cory Costa and Danny Johnson.
A solid field of fifteen DIRTcar Hoosier Tire Crate Sportsman were on hand as regular competitor; AJ Lloyd was able to hold off lady competitor, Nicole Hoag off to win the 25 lap feature event. For Lloyd it was his first trip to the Outlaw Speedway victory lane in 2019 and for Nicole Hoag it was yet another confidence booster as she looks for her first feature win at the track. Following Lloyd and Hoag across the line were Brandon Butler in third, Tim Guild fourth while third generation driver , Alex Payne made it a big night for the Payne family racing operation by finishing fifth at the finish after watching father, Eldon win the Modified feature earlier.
Last week when Glen Whritenour picked up his third feature of the season he knew that he would have to stay on the whip and win more features if he was going to make it three track titles in a row in the Stan’s No Tubes Street Stock Division. With a tremendous field of veteran competitors littered through the entire Street Stock roster both Whritenour and Dylan Cecce have completely dominated victory lane with the exception of a lone win by Aksel Jensen a few weeks ago. However, there is still a who’s who list of drivers just waiting in the wings for their turn at a feature win. Both Whritenour and Cecce started in the sixth starting row, but it was GW who got the jump and was able to three wheel his way into the lead and hold on in making it back to back feature wins and his fourth of the year. Chuck Winslow had his best run of the year by starting in row two and moving up a few spots to claim the runner up spot at the finish chased across the line by Quinn Sutherland, CJ Guererri and Jake Karlnoski.
Whritenour and Winslow claimed the qualifying heat races.
With the clock ticking toward the tracks 1 am curfew time the four remaining features in the Marion Decker Insurance sponsored IMCA Modifieds and Hobby Stocks along with the Sunrise Insulation American Racer Tier Crate Sportsman and the Mighty 4 Cylinders will be made up at a later date.
Add to this four other features that were rained out as part of the Short Track Super Series event in June including the Sunrise Insulation Outlaw Speedway American Racer Tire Series Race, the Stan’s No Tubes Street Stocks along with the Marion Decker Insurance Hobby Stocks and the Mighty 4 Cylinders. In addition the track has completely lost 4 shows this year, most in April and May reiterating the fact that like so many other race venues across the northeast Mother Nature has been the big winner in 2019.
Up next at the Outlaw Speedway on July 12 it will be another Super 7 Show with all the information you need including all gate and admission prices just a click away at www.Facebook.com/OutlawSpeedwayLLC/.
Race time is 7:30 pm at the historic Yates County oval where kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge and complementary rides on the Outlaw Crusher Monster Truck begin at 5:30 pm.
