Story By: KENNY SHUPP / WOODHULL RACEWAY – WOODHULL, NY – With the 2021-point championships in the rear-view mirror, 2nd season Woodhull Raceway owners, Terry and Niki Brewer have one order of business left prior to pulling the curtain on the year and that is the traditional Joe Willcox Performance 100 lap Street Stock event in addition to several other classes on the card for the September 18, 2021 closer.
“Joe and Jean Willcox are main stays in the Woodhull Raceway family of sponsors and supporters. Prior to us purchasing the facility we had known them thru their involvement at the track as sponsors plus they were always working behind the scenes in various other capacities most of which goes unnoticed. They are a great couple and work very hard to promote not only their business, but this track as well.” That according to Woodhull owners, Terry and Niki Brewer.
Kenny Shupp Jr. who handles the Public Relations for Woodhull has been friends with the Willcox’s for a years and echoes the Brewer’s sediments on their involvement at the facility.
“Joe and Jean work tirelessly to help better the Woodhull Raceway. Thru the past three or more promoters they have always jumped right in and dedicated their time and energy to help promote the track. Granted, Joe does transmission rebuilds for well over half the cars in the pit area, but it goes much further than that. They both love this place, hardly ever miss a night and always are coming up with ideas on how to generate more interest particularly for the young race fans. Joe and Jean are real diamonds in the rough and this facility is far better off because of their dedication.” That according to Shupp.
Several years ago, the Joe Willcox Performance Automatics 100 lap Street Stock Event came into fruition due to the vision of the husband-and-wife duo in making the Street Stock class more visible to fans an drivers alike. The 100-lap season ending affair including lap money makes this event standout in northeast racing circles as a must attend event to see what driver can beat the odds and survive the 100-lap grind around the tough high banks of the historic Woodhull, NY facility.
Brett Marlatt was able to hold off Brett Crawford in what many consider the best- ever 100 lap Joe Willcox Street Stock special in 2020. Crawford recently won the 2021 Track Championship in the class and will look to win the September 18 event.
In addition to the winner taking home a check for 2 grand, thousands more is up for grabs in lap money with all the information available on the tracks Facebook.
As part of the September season finale and with the points all done for the year, a pair of open divisions will be on the card as well including the Open Mini Stock and Open FWD classes. The Cummings Trucking RUSH Crate Late Models will see action along with a Crate Sportsman 30 lap special event.
Also, the Birdsall Family of Canisteo, NY have put together a lap money paying Woodhull Auto Supply Hobby Stock 30 lap feature event paying $2,088 to the winner with piles of lap money to be shelled out as well. The Hobby Stock Feature event is to pay homage to Billy Joe Birdsall who was one of the original competitors in the Front Wheel Drive Class when it began over a decade and a half ago. Birdsall succumbed to COVID 19 earlier in 2021 with the remaining family members stepping up and organized lap money for the Hobby Stock Special as part of the season’s final event. This will be perhaps the highest paying Hobby Stock Event ever in the region and a multitude of invaders are expected to be on hand to try and upend the Woodhull regulars including the likes of 2021 Track Champion, Jeredd Dennis along with Scott Brown, Mike Spencer, Carter Dennis, Greg Young and others. The Woodhull Auto Supply Hobby Stocks is a super competitive division where no less than nine different drivers visited victory lane during the “21” season. Joe Birdsall competes in the class and has his eyes set on the winner’s check and hardware as well as making the Birdsall family proud to win this prestigious event
