Information By: WOODHULL RACEWAY – WOODHULL, NY – With the New York State Stock Car Association and Close Racing Supply onboard as the nightly event sponsors, the Woodhull Raceway was once again able to get their Great 8 Show into the record books.
With yet another week of perfect weather conditions, a great crowd of fans was in attendance to enjoy the action where several drivers backed up previous wins with three new faces finding victory lane.
Jake Dgien has taken great strides this season in solidifying his place as one of the drivers to beat at the historic Steuben County New York speed plant. For the second week in a row and the third time overall thus far in 2022, Dgien parked his potent Dgien Trucking machine in Woodhull’s Pepsi Victory Lane. Pole position starter, Russ Morseman would bring the field to the opening green and lead the first ten circuits. Jake Dgien, who started inside row four methodically worked his way into second and by lap eleven powered by Morseman and took control and from there cruised to his second win in as many weeks on the high banked one-third of a mile clay oval. Once in front Dgien kept a comfortable margin between his machine and that of Donnie Lawson who had lined up fifth on the opening grid. With only a pair of caution flags to slow the pace Brady Fultz, who began the twenty-five-lap affair alongside Dgien was peddling hard towards the front and with the final caution flag waving on lap twenty-three it gave hope for both Lawson and Fultz that they may have a reprieve in catching Dgien, but that would not happen as Dgien got a good restart and went on to the win. Lawson would have to settle for second with Fultz rounding the top three podium positions. The drive of the night came from Brayden Bills who had trouble in his qualifying heat, lined up last on the grid and mowed the field down to come home fourth at the finish as he was followed across the line by Joe Dgien who completed the top five finishers.
With Jake Dgien’s win along with his cousin, Joe Dgien’s fifth place finish, the pair continue to lead the point parade in the Insinger Modified Division.
Adam Taft would take full advantage of his pole position starting spot in the NAPA Crate Sportsman and lead the first half of the twenty-five-lap feature event. Blake Lawson, who lined up along side of Taft in row one took over the lead on lap fourteen and go on to his second win of 2022 after finding victory lane previously on June 4. Like Lawson, Isabel Barron was also looking for her second win of the year and dogged Lawson the entire distance and with a late race caution tried everything to overtake the race leader but came up short settling for second at the double checkers. Taft had one of his better performances of the season and after leading early would drift to third at the finish as he was chased across the line by Cayden Lawson, brother of the feature winner who claimed fourth after starting ninth while last week’s winner, Levi Riley continues to impress in rounding the top five. Both Lawson brothers have now both won two feature events in the 2022 campaign.
Brian “Pork Chop” Knowles made short work of the Armstrong Rush Crate late Model feature event in leading all twenty laps to his fifth win of the season. With one lone caution flag slowing the event on lap fourteen, Knowles had a comfortable lead over the second-place machine of Steve LeBarron throughout the entire distance as the veteran wheelman from Troupsburg, NY, who came into the event with one feature win under his belt in 2022 would have to settle for second at the finish. Rookie contender, Brett Marlatt would begin the event just behind LeBarron in the fourth starting row and stayed glued to his rear spoiler throughout in claiming third at the finish. Austin Allen lined up fourth on the opening grid and that is right where he finished while June 18 feature winner, Jason McGregor would complete the top five.
It was a huge night for Ted Morseman in the Joe Willcox Performance Street Stock Division as early in the evening he was crowned King of the Ring in the one-on-one elimination event then would go on to get out the broom and sweep the night in winning the twenty-lap feature event. After a late start to the year and in only his third week out in the division for the 2022 season, Morseman and Mike Williams would lead the field to the opening green with Morseman getting the jump and lead all twenty laps and go on to his first win of the year. Current high point man and four-time 2022 feature winner, Brett Crawford would start right behind Morseman and keep things interesting throughout the entire distance staying with a car length of Morseman. Only a pair of caution flags would slow the pace, but in each case, Morseman was able to hold off the relentless pressure put on by Crawford to claim the win. Crawford would have to settle for second while other class favorites in Dan Gardner, Mick Seeley and Josh Webster would go on to complete the top five.
Paul Dgien has been a picture of consistency throughout the season in the Hobby Stock Division having knocked on the door numerous times only to come up a bit short. After watching his son, Kaiden win a pair of features during the 2022 season, Paul Dgien had more incentive than ever to find victory lane and that was the case on this night as he took the lead away from Brian Austin on lap seven and never looked back. A slew of caution flags would keep the field bunched up with last years Track Champion and April 23 feature winner, Jeredd Dennis stalking Dgien throughout most of the event. However, Dgien was too much to handle and went on to his first win of the year with Dennis having to settle for second. Mini Stock transplant, Jason Ketrow continues to impress and after leading the first three circuits drifted back but still held on for third as he was chased across the line by current point leader and four time “22” feature winner, Joe Birdsall with Scott Brown completing the top five finishers.
After a post-race disqualification last Saturday night, Willy Easling came storming right back to win the twenty lap Wicked Tee’s Mini Stock feature. Lining up eighth on the starting grid, Easling moved thru traffic quickly in getting to the front and from there cruised to his first ever feature win on the Woodhull High Banks. Craig Decame in a rare appearance began the event inside row three and followed Easling across the line in second while ninth place starter and April 30 feature winner, Rick Amidon would complete the top three. Last row starter, Tony Dickerson made some nifty moves coming thru traffic to wind up fourth with current high point man, Jason Warner completing the top five.
Wesley Houghtaling has been on a tear the last month in the Front Wheel Drive Division and for the fourth straight week and fifth time overall went on to claim the fifteen- lap feature win. Kayley Bacon had her best finish of the season in finishing in the runner-up spot with seven- time 2022 feature winner, Ryan Austin nailing down third. Nate Freeland and Kevin Doud would complete the top five. Thus far, Houghtaling and Austin have won all twelve features run in 2022 as the pair continue to dominate, however the consistency of Kevin Doud coupled with early season bad luck on the part of Houghtaling find Doud holding onto second place in the current point standings sandwiched between point leader, Austin and third place point getter Houghtaling with Bacon trailing in fourth.
Bradly Morseman continued his winning ways in the Wicked Tee’s Youth Warrior Division once again finding his way to victory lane. For Morseman it was win ten on the year and fifth in a row, however the wins continue to get tougher as all the kids that compete get better and better with each passing week. Courtney Thomas put on a great performance to finish second in the caution plagued fifteen lap feature with Kayleigh Morseman completing the top three. Fourth place went to Jaden Stone as Izzabella Morseman rounded the top five. Desaray Miles and two- time 2022 feature winner, Marshall O’Brian completed the field.
Congratulations to all competitors.
Up next at Woodhull it will be the return on the Patriot Sprint Tour along with a complete show of all the weekly classes including an $800 to win Hobby Stock feature.
The Nikk L Brew Restaurant and Alfred State College will co-sponsor the July 23 event with pit gates opening at 3:30 and grandstands one hour later at 4:30 pm.
