Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – MIDDLETOWN, NY – The Empire Super Sprints made their first ever appearance at the Orange County Fair Speedway on Saturday night and it was Jordan Poirier coming away with the win after a great race with Kyle Smith.
Local racer and many time OCFS feature winner, Brian Krummel, took the early lead in the 25 lap feature over Jeff Trombley. Krummel’s teammate for this race, Kyle Smith quickly moved up from 9th to 3rd by lap 5. Smith passed Trombley for 2nd on lap 6 and started to reel in Krummel.
Caution was out on lap 12 with Krummel leading Smith, Trombley and Poirier. Positions really scrambled on the restart with Smith moving to the lead and Poirier up to 2nd. Poirier passed Smith for the lead on lap 13, but the race was far from over.
Smith, running low, and Poirier, in the high groove, put on a tremendous race with Smith threatening to retake the lead for several laps until Poirier was able to put some distance on him.
At the finish, it was Poirier by just over 3 seconds ahead of Smith with Krummel 3rd, Danny Varin 4th and Shawn Donath 5th.
The top 10 was completed by Jason Barney 6th, Trombley 7th, Davie Franek 8th, Chuck Hebing 9th and OCFS favorite Billy VanInwegen 10th.
An ESS Dash was held with Dylan Swiernik the winner. Chuck Hebing was 2nd, Chad Miller 3rd, Christian Rumsey 4th, Matt Tanner 5th and Dalton Herrick 6th.
