Column By: RYAN LOEFFLER / RPW – FONDA, NY – JaMike Sowle used home track advantage to take home the victory in qualifying race #2 for Saturday night’s $53,000-to-win Fonda 200 at the Track of Champions.
Sowle was on the pole for the event where he was quickly able to jump out to an early advantage. He was able to hold off Jessica Friesen, Matt Sheppard and a host of others to score the win and make his way into the redraw for Saturday’s main event.
“I’ve got a great team behind me right now,” Sowle said. “Carol and Alton (Palmer, car owners) set us up for success.”
Talking to Sowle before the heat, he was “feeling good” but did mention the challenging field in his race that included the likes of Sheppard, Friesen Bobby Varin and Bobby Hackel.
Sowle’s advantage over the 1z of Friesen and Sheppard’s 9s dwindled through lap traffic as the race reached the closing stages. His Palmer’s Service Center DKM Chassis also began to puff a whisper of smoke towards the end but he was able to hold on and claim the win.
“I didn’t notice anything unusual with the car,” he said. “It looks like we’ve got a valve cover gasket that was leaking so thank God it wasn’t anything more serious.”
You could tell just how excited Sowle was after the race. He wasn’t just excited for his results on Friday, but possibly what could be on Saturday.
“This is the best the car has been all year,” he said. “The 76 team has worked really hard to get a car like this and their effort is paying off.”
