Story By: BRIAN PAIGE / MOHAWK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY – HOGANSBURG, NY – The second evening of the Mohawk Fall Nationals brought beautiful weather once again.
With the special evening of racing as we honored a longtime community member of Pete Mitchell for his dedication to racing ,CKON 97.3 was on hand and presented the 54 Lap Pete Mitchell Memorial Sportsman race, the Pro Stock Battle of the Borders race in conjunction with the Marijuana World Series finale, Limited Sportsman, Mini Stocks, and the Vintage cars.
With a fast race track well prepared the drivers were eager to put on a show for the fans. After the heats were done, it was time for the features.
The first feature of the evening to see the green flag were the Mini Stocks for 20 laps. The first car to see the green was Frances White who was seeking to sweep the weekend. Curtis Lindsay was up the challenge on this evening as he and White would go side by side for the first 3 laps.
On lap 3 the yellow would come out as a car stopped in between turns 3 and 4. On the restart White would begin to pull away from Lindsay until the yellow came out again. Once again on the restart, White would pull away until the yellow came out on Lap 5 for two cars that came together off of turn 1. The restart would see White be passed by Carl Gorry on lap 5. White would come together with Gorry coming off of 4 with Gorry ending up in the infield.
White would be sent to the back. Kevin Greenfield would inherit the lead on lap 8 and break away. Greenfield would go to pick up the win.
The Limited Sportsman would be the next feature for 20 laps. Brady Howard and Thunder Anderson would start from the front row. From the first green flag, last evening’s winner Howard would get off to a great start again. Howard would unfortunately clip a yuke tire off of turn 2 and land in the infield.
Howard would be ok according to officials from track side. On the lap 17 restart, the new leader Thunder Anderson would not be challenged and parked his car in Victory Lane.
Matt Barbour won the Vintage Stock Car Club feature. Greg Hale won the 50’s Vintage feature.
The Battle of the Border for Pro Stocks would be ready to go for 30 laps. The pole sitter Denis Gauvreau would fire from the first green flag and create a considerable distance between him and the field. The yellow would come out as Burton Ward came to stop and took his car pitside.
With the restart and the field grouped back together, Gauvreau took off from the lap 5 restart and ventured to the highside again. A multi car pile up would bring out the caution on lap 6 to bring out the yellow. On the restart, Gauvreau would start to feel pressure from Yves Hamel who was running second.By lap 14 Gauvreau opened a huge lead. The battle to watch was the one between Luke Horning and Chad Jeseo.
The cars would swap positions for the next 5 laps. On lap 23 Horning would use a lap car to his advantage enter his car to the bottom of 3 while Gauvreau was caught behind the lap car. The yellow would come out on lap 26 for two cars which came together in turn one.
On the lap 26 restart, Horning would quickly go to the top while Jeseo was trying to follow. However Jeseo would over cook it and end up off the speedway just off of turn 2. The lap 28 restart would see Horning and Gauvreau set a two lap battle for the win.
However Horning was too strong for the field this weekend as he would pick up his second win of the weekend to win the Battle of the Border.
The final feature of the night was the Pete Mitchell 54 lap Memorial Race in conjunction with the Twin Leaf series finale. Starting on the pole it would be Shane Pecore with Robert Delormier to his outside. On start serveral cars ended up spinning off of turn 1 to negate the start.
On the next start Pecore fired quickly to jump out to the early lead. Delormier and Casey Swamp would battle for the second spot. By lap 5 Pecore would lead by several car lengths as Delormier would settle into the number two spot. The yellow would come out on lap 11 as Jamy Begor came to a stop off of turn 3.
With the restart Pecore would rapidly fire and give himself some distance between and Delormier. By lap 18 DJ Gonyo would use the highside off of four to take the second spot away from Delormier. By lap 26 Pecore would enter heavy lap traffic with Gonyo still in second. Billy Cook had mechanical issues on lap 33 to bring out the yellow.
With 21 laps remaining the field would be restacked once again. Pecore elected to fire from the from the bottom. Dave Rogers would take the second spot away from Gonyo on lap 33. Bucko Branham came to a stop entering turn 4 and would need assistance back to the pits.
On the lap 37 restart, Pecore would again start from the bottom and use his experience to his advantage. Pecore would feel pressure from Rogers on lap 50 but Pecore would be able to overcome this and would go on to pick up the win.
