Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – MIDDLETOWN, NY – It’s an all too familiar scene in the northeast dirt racing world in 2023…another big race weekend affected by rain.
This time, it’s the Eastern States Weekend at the Orange County Fair Speedway.
Despite the unfavorable forecast, OCFS officials went ahead to try to get the Sportsman 50-lap championship race in the books.
They nearly succeeded.
With 2023 OCFS Sportsman Champion Brian Krummel out front, an intense rain shower ended the night’s activities with 18 laps completed.
The race will be first on Saturday’s schedule to be completed. When the race resumes, Krummel will be leading Joey Bruning, Eric Mack, Gary Edwards Jr. and Drew Boniface.
Earlier time trial action saw Bruning edging out Krummel for the pole position spot. Eric Mack was 3rd, Mike Sabia 4th, Darrel Ford 5th and Kevin Stevens 6th.
Heat race wins went to Jared LaBagh, John Bockhorn, Edwards Jr., Tim Hartman Sr., Tyler Johnston and Mike Doty.
A total of 66 Sportsman cars took time trials.
