Column By: DYLAN FRIEBEL / RPW – FULTON, NY – It was three laps from the finish when 15th place starter Bobby Herrington passed leader Tony Finch in the 50-lap Sportsman Shootout at Fulton Speedway Saturday night as apart of the Outlaw 200 weekend and went on to score the victory.
The first part of event was plagued by the yellow slick as well as two red flags coming before lap 40.
A huge pile up entering turn one caused about five to eight cars to enter the pits and not come back. It was at that point that Bobby found himself in the front portion of the field.
“We started pretty deep and I thought we had a good car,” he said. “Everything went our way and the #0 car was a little bit better then us on the last stint, but our tires must of fired better then his at the end.”
With over 60 sportsman signed in its always tough to win the Sportsman feature at this weekend. Starting mid-pack can make the odds even harder but Bobby never lost confidence.
“I thought there were a lot of good cars ahead of us so I did not think it was likely,” he said. “Once we got rolling, I thought we had a pretty good car and sometimes you need things to go your way a little bit.”
Finch came home in the second position after running up front all race.
For third place finisher Emmett Waldron, who started even farther then the winner in 19th place, it was also a long way to the front.
“I started at Cayuga county in the race shop,” Waldron said. “The car was pretty good there. I thought I was able to catch the back of him but the 88 was really fast.”
Waldron was thrilled with his night.
“It was a good run for us,” he said. “We have been struggling lately. I didn’t think I would be sitting on the podium with where I started this year. To get through the field with a Sportsman and avoid the damage is tough.”
