Story By: ACCORD SPEEDWAY – ACCORD, NY – The dirt racing community across New York State once again had its challenges in 2023 and this time, the biggest headwinds came from the weather.
Accord Speedway was no exception while feeling the added challenge of promoting an addition of a brand new division focused on vintage cars.
It was clear from the beginning and the community interest that even Mother Nature was no match for the Accord Speedway Vintage Modifieds (ASVM) who’s racing mission is looking towards the future with an eye on the past.
In a shortened season of only four vintage events, it was evident that the inaugural ASVM effort was destined for success. Over the course of the limited features, the car count more than doubled, culminating in two captivating races for the title in “The Fall Bullring Classic.”
After considering all of the positive response from the 2023 season, ASVM Race Director Larry Ricci and Administrator Denise Markle decided to approach the Palmer family about adding another Vintage Modifieds genre for the 2024 racing season featuring 1980’s slab sided bodies.
Per Ricci, ASVM needs to expand it’s participation base to gain interest from a younger generation of racers.
The new addition, dubbed the “80’s Flashback Class” or “Flashback”, will allow up to 2010 model year chassis ‘with modifications’ and run it’s own feature in addition to the existing Accord Speedway Classic Vintage Modifieds Division. For consistency of cars, body style specifications are based on the 1984 and 1991 D.I.R.T. rule books.
The availability of 2010 and older cars can be obtained for reasonable prices making Vintage Modified racing a desirable option throughout the East Coast.
“The Flashback division excludes narrow modern cars/hoods, nose wings and spoilers,” states Ricci.
The rules and regulations for both division classes can be found on the Accord Speedway Vintage Modifieds Facebook page or sent upon request. For further questions/information, please contact Larry Ricci at 845-532-1973 or via email at modracer32@gmail.com.
