Sponsors Coming On Board For “Don Davies New York Modifieds 76” At Albany-Saratoga
Story By: JO ANN DAVIES / ALBANY-SARATOGA SPEEDWAY – MALTA, NY – The season opener is just weeks away for Albany-Saratoga Speedway and race teams and fans alike are anxiously awaiting to see who the best of the best at the popular 4/10-mile oval during the 2024 season.
High on the list of the anticipated early season events is the “Don Davies New York Modifieds 76” Super DIRTcar Series event to be held Tuesday, June 25. The race has drawn a lot of attention for its unique format for an SDS event that will include the feature redraw occurring just before the feature and a lap 46 caution that will result in an invert of up to eight (8) drivers. The redraw will create a “race within a race” format as drivers vie for the $2,000 lap 46 bonus as well as the $7,600 to win.
Davies, a journalist for more than five decades, was an avid supporter of the Malta oval and its promoter, Lyle DeVore. Davies fought a courageous two-year battle with cancer succumbing in August of 2023. This event to honor Don’s memory, was the brainchild of Lyle and his wife, Marcy, and incorporates several “changes’ to the standard SDS format. In addition to the Modified SDS show, there will be the Sportsman “djdaviesmedia 26” and Pro Stock “Don Davies Speedway Scene 23” events.
The three divisions have received feature race sponsorship from many contributors including Bart Contracting, Greg’s Towing & Repair, RacingJunk.com, Palmer Service Center, Weedsport Speedway, Pro Angle General Contracting, Native Pride, Krash Menders, Cordova Plumbing, Madsen Overhead Doors, Greenacres Landscaping, JCO Plumbing & Heating, 1670 Sports & Entertainment, and Ferris Mowers.
In addition, sponsorship for the 76 laps of the Modified feature was filled within 10 days of announcement of the unique SDS event, with some laps having two to three contributors. The contributors represent family friends of Davies that he and his wife Jo Ann have known since their college days, as well as many members of their racing family.
