Story By: HAZER / CAPITAL DISTRICT RACING ASSOCIATION – FONDA, NY – Once again the Sportsman Modified division will take center stage in a championship points series dedicated to racing exclusively in the Capitaland in upstate NY.

Six points paying races will determine a champion for the Capital District Racing Association. Welcome to the CDRA.

According to the Albany Times Union the Capital District, which is also referred to as Capitaland, is made up of 11 counties which include Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington. In those counties reside four unique and storied dirt racetracks.

Of those four unique and storied dirt racetracks there are three that have like-minded rules that allow drivers to move from one track to another for competition. They include Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Lebanon Valley Speedway, and Glen Ridge Motorsports Park. These three tracks will make up the 2024 CDRA schedule.

The series kicks off with a points-paying race at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park on Sunday May 19th for their DIRTcar East Region event before returning to ‘The Ridge’ on July 28th as part of their Hall Of Fame Classic night.

CDRA heads to the Capital District hot spot for Friday Night racing in Malta, NY for the highly anticipated Don Davies NY Modified Memorial special at Albany-Saratoga Speedway on Tuesday June 25th. The series returns to Albany-Saratoga for a second visit during the speedway’s Malta Massive Weekend DIRTcar Sportsman event on September 20th.

Smack dab in the middle of the CDRA Racing schedule is the ‘Valley Swing’ with back-to-back races at Lebanon Valley Speedway on August 17th for Halloween Night and August 31st as part of Mr. Dirt Track USA Super DIRTcar Series night.

“With this project I explained up front it’s a very hands-off approach. Meaning with this series we don’t influence laps, format, purses, etc. We want the tracks to utilize what’s unique about the racing they offer. So, drivers may get draw-redraw at one race and then time trials at another. It’s different, and I like that,” said CDRA competition director Rob Hazer.

All about info, rules, point structure, points earned, driver roster, and more can be found on the website that is live now. There are of course marketing partners that make CDRA happen.

“For season one I wanted to keep it simple. Go back to the basics sort of speak. I couldn’t do that without some marketing partners to get it built from the ground up,” continued Rob Hazer.

He concluded by saying, “I have to thank Lyle DeVore, Ron Dwyer, and Ray Sefrin first. I’m grateful for their enthusiasm on the project. Also, Chris Reckner from Elmo’s Speed Supply and JAM Performance for his continued support in projects I work on. He’s offering up monetary rewards for drivers to chase. That’s huge, and I appreciate what he does for the sport,” concluded Rob Hazer.

CDRA is built on nostalgia and is a throwback to the old CVRA days, except it’s specifically designed for the Capital District racing scene. Just six races on a diverse schedule will crown a champion who will earn hardware and some green for their efforts. A proverbial win-win for all involved.
