Column By: RYAN LOEFFLER / RPW – WEEDSPORT, NY – The Super DIRTcar series returned after a near month-long break for round four of the 2024 season Sunday night at Weedsport Speedway for the Heroes Remembered 100.

The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend is widely considered as “the greatest day of racing” and the fun continued for Super DIRTcar Series Modified fans with the 100 lapper at the Port.

While Mat Williamson has found himself victorious in this event in the past, he was sitting in seventh Series points heading into the night.

However, a win will change all that and Williamson made it back-to-back wins in the Memorial Day Spectacular, taking the lead from Stewart Friesen on lap 40.

However, second place finisher, Peter Britten, made it interesting as the laps wound down.

Britten battled with Williamson in the closing laps but came up one spot short.  More importantly, the Australian took sole ownership of the Super DIRTcar Series points lead after entering the night tied with Anthony Perrego.

This was Britten’s second trip to the podium in Super DIRTcar Series competition this season and first time in the top three at Weedsport in his career, ranging some 45 starts.

“Everyone must’ve really screwed up tonight if I’m up here,” Britten joked.  “This place has been an absolute nemesis for me.  We’ve just struggled for years.  We started to get better here last year and early on tonight, I thought I would’ve been lucky to hold on to fifth.

As the race went on, the 21A started moving forward.

“All of the sudden, the last part of the race, we got really good,” he said.  “Either we stayed good and others started to fade or what happened.  The car came alive at the end.”

The vibes are positive in the Britten camp after a good night on Sunday.

“We’re real proud of this one tonight,” he said.  “If we can run good here, we can run good anywhere.”

Stewart Friesen took the final spot on Weedsport’s Victory Hill Sunday night.  Hot off of a second place finish in the NASCAR Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday night, Friesen was able to get out front and lead some laps but fell to third at the finish.

“We were too good too early,” Friesen said.  “I knew Mat (Williamson) is always tough here.  We fired off really, really good and it strong.  We just ended up losing the handling about midway through.”

Sunday was a good finish for the Halmar 44 team in their first Super DIRTcar race this season.

“A podium finish here is a good night for us,” he said.  “We’ll just keep building the notebook, and hopefully will be better next time we come back.”
