Story By: CHRIS MOORE / BROOKFIELD SPEEDWAY – BROOKFIELD, NY – Walton, N.Y.’s Blaine Klinger topped the Scenic View Campground Sportsman feature on Thursday night at Brookfield Speedway.
Klinger started the 25-lap main from the fourth position following the redraw and used the outside groove to ultimately wrestle the lead away from David Hackett Jr. for the win.
“I just love it here,” Klinger smiled. “This is the kind of track I grew up racing on… It fits my style and I just really enjoy short track racing.”
Klinger nearly won his second consecutive ‘Fast Cars and Freedom’ event at the end of May at the Madison County Fairgrounds, but he was unable to use the outside lane as effectively as he did this time.
“I had a lot of practice that night making the outside lane work,” Klinger explained.
“I knew when I got to second for that restart, I was going to be able to drive it in hard and it would stick.
“Hopefully I’m back on the frontstretch talking to you again tomorrow (at N.Y.’s Utica-Rome Speedway),” he concluded.
Klinger raced from the outside of the second row quickly into the runner-up spot at the drop of the green flag and set his sights on Hackett Jr. out front.
When the race’s first, and only, yellow flag flew, Klinger seized the opportunity.
Klinger raced around the outside of turns one and two and stole the lead away from Hackett.
The race clicked off caution free from there and Klinger walked away with the victory, worth $700.
Hackett settled for second with Stephen Denton, Butchie Irwin, and Matt Richardson rounding out the top five.
Damon Decker dominated the White’s Welding Pro/Street Stock feature after firing from the pole and leading all 20-laps of the caution free affair.
Gene Sharpsteen, who won the season opener, and Kurt Decker put on a great battle for the runner-up spot for most of the race, but neither had anything to offer Damon for the victory.
Sharpsteen prevailed with second, Kurt Decker was third, with Kenny Gates and Ken Griffin rounding out the top five.
Brenton Payne won the first ever 600cc Modified feature event, leading all 20 laps in another non-stop affair.
Payne’s adjustments following the heat race led to a dominant win. T.J. Smith and Talan Oliver completed the podium.
Kyle Simmons won a dramatic Anderson Towing & Recovery Four Cylinder feature, after Cameron Krause had a flat right rear tire with less than five laps to go.
Jeff Weeks inherited the lead, but Simmons wrestled it away a couple laps later to pick up the win. Mike Ferris finished third overall, good enough to pick up the Single Cam win.
Brayden Ketchum used a late race restart to pick up the Abrams Press All-Star Slingshot victory over Sullivan Dickey and Justin House.
Blake Banek finally was able to pick up his first career Brookfield Speedway victory in the Abrams Press Junior Slingshot feature over Lucas Cole and Addisyn Roger.
Brookfield Speedway is back in action on Thursday, July 11 to kick off the 185th annual Madison County Fair.
