Story By: NATHAN ALDRICH / PENN CAN SPEEDWAY – SUSQUEHANNA, PA – Bobby Puckett and Nick Mady led the charge out of turn 4 as a feisty field of Modifieds headlined Youth Sports Night at Penn Can Speedway.
Mady launched well from the outside to lead as Kevin Hartnett quickly diced through the holes to take the fourth spot after starting sixth. With five laps complete Hartnett had slid under Puckett to take the second spot and set his sights on Mady who was five car lengths ahead.
A jingle in turn 4 left Joe Eisenhauer facing the wrong direction, and put Hartnett alongside Mady for a double file restart. Mady elected for the inside, leading by a car length at the start finish line. Hartnett powered off the cushion to take the lead down the backstretch while Marshall Hurd worked past Puckett for fourth. By lap 10 Hartnett held a half straightaway lead, quickly erased after Greene and Puckett made contact in turn 1, with the 40 of Puckett coming to a stop on the backstretch. Puckett headed pitside as Greene was penalized one spot for rough riding. After the penalty; Hartnett, Mady, John Michael Phillips, Hurd and Creeden would make up the top 5.
Hartnett elected for the outside of Mady, rocketing away on the restart as Hurd worked the outside of Mady for second. At the halfway point Hurd had the positioning inside to wrestle second from Mady, bringing Creeden along. Disaster struck for Mady the next lap, as he slowed to the infield and the yellow reset the field. With Hurd on the inside, Hartnett led down the frontstretch but stayed door to door through the corner. The pair battled back to the line with Hartnett maintaining the lead and turn 4 becoming a parking lot with 6 cars piled up.
From there Hartnett would dash unchallenged to the checkers as Creeden and Hurd battled fiercely for second swapping sliders and losing ground on the leader. Feature winner Kevin Hartnett would like to thank Brad Grammes and Mike, Joey, Bill , Donna, Higfab Chassis, RPM Race Engines, Penske Shocks, and everyone in the Grammes family.
