Column By: TOM WENNER / RPW – BECHTELSVILLE, PA – Veteran Modified racer Mike Myers is returning to the Grandview Speedway for Sportsman competition in ’22 after a 27 year absence.
Mike was born into a racing family. His parents owned Dirt Modified Stock Cars for many years.
You can say that racing gasoline runs in Mike’s blood. Mike’s racing appetite for competition is obvious when you hear of the many racing divisions that Myers Motorsports has competed in over the years.
Mike’s father, Buck owned a successful Dirt Modified team that competed all over the northeast in the 1970-80’s era. Drivers who steered the early Myers Motorsports Dirt Modifieds are Walt Breeding, Bobby Wilkins, Bill Wentz and Jack Sapp. Those early Buck Myers owned cars scored many victories and were 1 of the stronger teams on the Delaware racing scene.
In 1979, It was time for Mike to get behind the wheel of his parents Modified. Mike raced at Reading, Georgetown and the 5/8 Bridgeport Speedway successfully over the late 70’s and early 80’s.
As Mike’s parents stepped away from ownership, Mike took over and started tackling the PA Small Block Modified circuit at the Grandview Speedway and Big Diamond Speedway. Mike raced the PA Tri-Track circuit into the 90’s. In August of 1994, Mike was able to score a NASCAR Grandview Speedway 358 Modified feature win. A highlight of Mike’s career at Grandview. In 1995, Mike decided to step away from driving, But fielded a brand new Olsen Car for Paul Koch to campaign on the PA Tri-Track circuit.
In 1996, Mike retired competition to focus on the family trucking business. Later that year, Mike went into a different direction with Myers Motorsports for his need for speed. A Junior Dragster was purchased and his daughter successfully campaigned in the drag racing world. Mike’s daughter graduated to a Super Comp Dragster before she went off to college.
Next up for Mike, AMA Motorcycle Racing. Flat Track AMA Motor Cycle racing was the new endeavor for Myers Motorsports. Mike fielded Kawasaki AMA Flat Track Bikes for Ruan Wood, Mike Scott and Chad Cose successfully for several years.
Mike then bought a beach house in Delaware and took a few years away from racing competition to relax. Mike continued to follow his many friends at the track and was never really away from it all, then the racing bug bit him last year and Mike starting making plans for a return to the “Hill” in Bechtelsville.
For ’22, Mike has purchased a lightly used Bicknell Modified Chassis. He has slowly built up a strong supply of parts and has a strong Open Sportsman and 602 Crate Motor ready for ’22 Grandview competition.
Mike has a super crew of friends who have been around the track for years. Rick Fenstermaker, who has owned many successful cars over the years at the PA Tri-Tracks, Scott Miller and a few others.
Mike has a beautiful #7 Bicknell Modified that was lettered by 1 of the best in the business, Scottie Kania.
