Jordan Kelly Claims First-Career DIRTcar 358-Modified Feature Event Win At Can-Am Friday

Story By: TIM BALTZ / CAN-AM SPEEDWAY – LAFARGEVILLE, NY – The 2022 season has been very competitive as several different drivers have graced victory lane in all six classes at the Can Am Speedway. This past Friday saw yet another driver, get their first career win.

The Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman took three tries to get their 12 lap feature underway. Keegan Nier was looking to put the bad luck from the previous two weeks behind him, as he led early over Joe Trichilo and Owen Nier. Keegan Nier was fast but Paul DeRuyter was charging forward and looking to score his 4th win in a row. DeRuyter got to second but still had ground to make up on the race leader as the laps clicked off. On lap 10 Joey Wilcox spun in turn 3 and 4 giving DeRuyter one final shot at Nier for the lead. On the restart Keegan Nier would go unchallenged as he scored his second win of the season. DeRuyter would cross in 2nd over Joe Trichilo, Owen Nier and Cole Perry.

Josh Verne Jr. started the season on a roll winning back to back events in June but since then had been shut out of victory lane. In the Panther Frameworx 602 Crate Sprints, Verne was dominant in the 15 lap affair as he led the way early over Jordan Bennett and points leader Logan Crisafulli. With the race going caution free, Josh Verne Jr. had built up a big lead and would hold it to the finish for his third win of the year. Jordan Bennett, Logan Crisafulli, Tucker Donath and Ryan Poole completed the top 5.

Cameron Black and Jordan Kelly paced a competitive Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified field to green as Kelly took the top spot in the 25 lap event, over Cameron Black, Scott Webb, Derek Webb and Shaun Shaw. The track was plenty fast on this night as Kelly opened up a big lead but behind him Shaun Shaw was on the move early. Shaw would take the second spot after a great battle with Scott and Derek Webb with Billy Dunn running fifth. The race would go caution free as Kelly remained in control while Shaun Shaw’s charge to the lead would slow as he found himself in a battle with Billy Dunn, who came from 9th on the grid to challenge for the second spot. With no cautions, a fast race track and a strong car, Jordan Kelly would finally achieve something he has wanted for a long time, as he scored his first ever DIRTcar 358 Modified feature win at Can Am. Shaun Shaw would finish a career best second over Billy Dunn, Derek Webb and Ryan Bartlett.

OJ White claimed his first heat win of the season earlier in the evening and would lead the opening 4 laps of the Marsha Gibbons TLC Real Estate Thundercar feature, over Austin Smith and points leader Joe Orvis. On lap 4 Orvis would take over the top spot, but OJ White’s great run came to an end early as he broke the rear end on his car, as last weeks winner Jock Symonds also headed to the pits with mechanical problems. On the restart Orvis would take the lead but defending track champion Tony Frezzo was right there to challenge. The yellow flew again as Austin Smith got turned into the wall on the front stretch, which caused heavy damage to his car. When the green flew again Orvis remained up front with Frezzo and Francis White completing the top three. Joe Orvis had a fast race car and had been shutout of victory lane since his opening day win on May 6th. After 4 second place efforts it was finally his night as Orvis would collect his second win of the season, over Tony Frezzo, Francis White, Corey Valade and Justin McIntyre.
Josh Reome was the star of the show in the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman feature. Reome took the lead on lap 1 from Tiger Chapman and pulled away from a quality field early on, with Remington Hamm, Gavin Eisle and Ryan Shanahan completing the top 5. Reome had built up over a straight away lead by the half way point, but on the move was two-time defending track champion Tyler Corcoran, who charged to second by the half way point. Corcoran still had a lot of ground to make up as Reome would stabilize the lead at around 10 car lengths in the remaining laps. Without help from a caution flag, Tyler Corcoran and others had no chance to catch the leader, as Josh Reome would go on to dominate the race for his first win of the season. Tyler Corcoran, Remington Hamm, Mike Fowler and Gavin Eisle completed the top five.

Last weeks winner in the FABCO DIRTcar Pro Stock division, Eli Gilbert, was in a bid for two in a row as he led the way over Bruno Richard and Denis Gauvreau. The lead for Gilbert was short lived however, as Richard would take the top spot and begin to author a dominant performance once again. Richard pulled away and never looked back as he scored his third win of the season and 12th win overall in 2022. Denis Gauvreau would win the battle with Eli Gilbert for second with Justin White and Tyler Bushey completing the top five.
