Column By: ROBERT SYMONDS / RPW – WOODHULL, NY – The Woodhull Raceway has held some of the bigger Modified races in the Southern Tier of New York over the 57 year history.
This weekend, owners Nikki and Terry Brewer with BH Log Hauling plan to host the biggest paying Modified event in the history of the High Banks in honor of one of the former owners of the track.
During the Jim Williams era, Woodhull held Super DIRTcar Series races as teams competed in Syracuse Qualifiers. The Drakes and Vern Wasson eras saw multiple payout events encompassing T3 All Star Series events and some non-series events while the Ted & Brandi White had hosted multiple Short Track Super Series events. This year, both Nikki and Terry Brewer with GM Mike Bills are hosting a first annual event with the biggest Modified payout in High Banks history. BH Log Hauling will present the first annual Honoring Alice event this Saturday.
Modified teams are set to compete for 50 Laps and $5,500 top prize with $400 to start. The event is in memorial of Woodhull’s Alice Williams. Late wife of Jim Williams, Alice helped with the ownership and promoting the events of the Woodhull Raceway through 1997. Even after the track was sold to Scott and Amy Drake, Alice was a frequent visitor of the High Banks and supported the racers including her sons racing careers.
With it being a Modified special event, the format will be draw/redraw and all Woodhull Raceway Modified regular competitors will get show up points only instead of their regular season feature points.
Tough weekly competitors are planning on competing for the top prize, including Donnie Lawson, Jake Dgien, Russell Morseman, and point leader Joe Dgien. Outside competition will also have a shot at the $5,500 including Cory Costa in the Dunning NAPA Auto Parts 02, AJay Potrzebowski II is looking to Get Wicked in his Wicked Tees 72, Ron Cartwright Jr in the Previty’s Auto Wrecking 2B, and Jeffrey Daugherty is also planning on making the trip with his Southern Tier Logistics 22jz.
