Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – ACCORD, NY – It’s going right down to the wire for the Accord Speedway Modified point championship. Going into this Friday’s regular season finale, only 11 points separate the top 4 in the standings
And the outcome will be determined this Friday, as the point season ends with a big show. It will be First Responder’s Night and Salute to the Vet’s. A fireworks extravaganza is also on the event schedule.
If you have been to an Accord Speedway fireworks event in the past, you know what a great show it is. And if you will be a first time attendee at Accord, you will be very impressed.
The night is sponsored by O’Connor & Partners PLLC of Kingston, NY.
Defending champion Danny Creeden is out front by 3 points over 2019 champion Jimmy Wells. Danny Tyler trails Creeden by 5, and Rich Ricci Jr is 11 behind.
It was tough going in last Friday’s feature for the top 3 in the points. Creeden finished 20th and Tyler 18th. Wells looked like he was going to benefit the most as he was in the top 5 until last lap problems dropped him to 12th. Ricci Jr gained 21 points on the leader to still remain in contention for championship night.
Daniel Morgiewicz Jr. continues to impress at Accord and he has moved into the top 5 in points, one marker ahead of Joe Judge.
Tyler has visited Victory Lane the most in the division this season, taking 3 checkered flags. Creeden and Judge are the other multi feature winners with 2 apiece.
The Sportsman point standings got a real shakeup this week. Heading into last Friday’s race, the top 3 were separated by 2 points. With Travis Green’s win, he has taken a 14 point lead over Jimmy Johnson. Tyler Johnston was an early retiree last Friday and has gone from leading the points to now trailing by 32.
Kevin Stevens and Jared LaBagh are fairly well locked into 4th and 5th in the Sportsman points heading into the finale.
The top 4 in the Sportsman have had their share of success this season. Green has 3 wins with Johnson, Johnston and Stevens with 2 wins apiece. Brian Durbin, 6th in points, also has 2 wins in 2022.
Three time feature winner in 2022, John Hechinger, has an 8 point lead in the Pure Stocks heading into Friday. Joe Narok, also with 3 wins, is second. Defending champion, Walt Henry is on a roll with two straight wins. He trails Hechinger by 20.
Jayden Sleight has had a rough few weeks with engine issues. But it does look like he will have a 4th place point finish with at least one feature win for his 2022 efforts. Brian Walsh is 5th in points and 2 time 2022 winner. David Demorest is 6th.
Charles Weslowski will be the 2022 Accord Speedway NEWS Sprints champion. Eric Jennings is 2nd, Steve Kyser 3rd, Dan Malley 4th and Jeremy Quick 5th.
Brandon Conklin has a 30 point lead in the 4 Cylinder division. Tim DeGrote is 2nd with Chris Dyer 3rd, George Barringer 4th and Jeff DeGroat 5th.
With 7 visits to Victory Lane, Amber Baccaglini has a 30 point lead over Sophia Spear. Madison Lewis is 3rd, Rob Charmello 4th and Alex McCann 5th.
Brayden Traver has had a great season in the Junior Slingshots, taking 4 wins. He has a 42 point lead heading into the final night over Calleigh Stritmater. Walt Henry IV is 3rd, EJ Hatch is 4th and Bodie Marks 5th.
It’s all set up for a great title race on Friday. With the anniversary of 9/11 two days later, it will be a great night to see the Salute to the Vets and the fireworks. It will be a night to remember at Accord. Support your local racetrack!!
