Column By: BRETT HORLACHER / RPW – ROTTERDAM, NY – If you’re anything like me, you’re tired of Winter and have a craving for all things racing.
While we still must wait until Spring arrives in the Northeast, we can certainly find things to wet our appetite and tide us over until the dirt actually flies.
One of those places is the Viaport Rotterdam Mall (formerly the Rotterdam Square Mall) in Rotterdam, NY. There you’ll find the Big Block Modifieds of the star drivers such as 2023 Fonda Track Champion Matt Delorenzo, Ronnie Johnson and Rocky Warner.
Adding to the huge gathering of center-steer Modifieds were stars of the 602 Crate Sportsman. As always, there were several Pro Stocks in attendance, including the always expertly prepared #35 of Kenny Gates.
Rounding out the full-fendered contingent were several Four Cylinder cars.
Also, for those wanting to see cars of yesteryear, there was a very large contingent of cars from the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds, and finally for those who want to see what the stars of the future are likely driving, the center of the mall has several Slingshots and Go-Karts.
While you’re at the Mall, you can grab a bite at the Viaport’s The Local FFF (Food Friends Fun) and get some awesome arcade time in. The Margarita pizza is certainly a good choice (certified “Thumbs-Up” by my picky eight-year old).
Spotlight interview takeaways:
For those looking for a good feel good story, look for the #27 602 Sportsman Modified of Jason Reome.
Rebounding from a heavy crash during Super DIRT Week last October and only being able to salvage the center section of his car, Reome has buckled down this winter and replaced the car with all 2023 updated components.
Looking to build on his last-season successes at Fonda, look for the 27 to be a fast piece this year.
If you’re looking for someone who’s ready to prove themselves, the #8 Sportsman of Josh Kane, who has moved up from the Limited division to full 602 Sportsman competition, has a beautiful new DKM Cyclone that he’s looking to run for the entire season at Fonda Speedway.
Upgrading from a totaled 2018 DKM Cyclone, purchased after totaling a 2015 Troyer Chassis last year, Josh certainly has a lot to prove, and a lot of people to thank.
“I’d like to thank my wife and children, my adopted Uncle Rick and my sponsors,” Kane said. “They include Holmes & Kulger’s Towing, Armsler’s Auto and Mangino Mitsubishi. Thank you for your continued support.”
