Column By: MARTY CZEKALA / RPW – DUNDEE, NY – Zeb Wise watched his Rudeen Racing No. 26 race from home last week after a concussion put him out at Eldora.
After missing Jacksonville and Wilmot last weekend, plus Wayne County Tuesday for High Limit, Zeb Wise returned to win the caution-free All-Star Circuit of Champions feature at Outlaw Speedway.
“You never know what to expect when you come back from an injury,” Wise told RPW. “I felt really good all night. Come feature time, I knew we’d be good. I honestly wasn’t expecting to be as good as we were. I could move anywhere we wanted. It’s awesome.”
After winning the dash, Wise fell back to second as far as two seconds behind outside polesitter Tim Shaffer. In heavy lapped traffic, Wise could close in on Shaffer by running the top. Shaffer tried to slam the door down the back chute, allowing Wise to cross over.
“I was just pacing with him,” Wise said. “I didn’t want to get to lap traffic first because I didn’t know what line was going to work. I’d rather be second than be the leader and get passes doing something stupid. I didn’t expect the top to go in. When I went up there, it went in.”
“Were too good too early. Ran out of wing,” Shaffer explained. “Couldn’t get it to grind anymore. Sometimes, it’s a great feeling, but a bad feeling because you know you’re going to be struggling in the last 10 laps. It’s a learning curve. Happy to find a balance now that we can work the last 10 laps good.”
Fastest qualifier and now second in points, Parker Price-Miller was able to rebound and make a late pass on Shaffer with five to go to finish runner-up.
“I felt like we were going to have a very good track position,” Price-Miller stated. “It was single file those first few laps, and then we got into traffic and started getting racey pretty good. My car was okay. Once I cleared Shaffer, I was hoping with open ground that, I could run Zeb down, but it was too late. Would’ve liked to see a caution to see what we would’ve done, but it is what it is.”
22 cars checked in, with 21 taking the green for the extended 35-lap feature.
The All-Stars head to Fonda tomorrow night and Weedsport Sunday, two tracks Wise has never been to.
“Hope to keep this momentum we’ve got,” Wise said. “We were really good before I got hurt. We come back, and I win. Feel very happy. Looking forward to the next two nights.”
