Danny Creeden Scores $2,500 Modified Win Sunday Night At Five Mile Point Speedway
Story By: FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY – KIRKWOOD, NY – Dan Creeden recorded the 35 lap Modified victory on Sunday at Five Mile Point Speedway in a caution free event. The victory was worth $2,500.
Mike Nagel, Jr. was the $1,000 Crate Sportsman winner. The victory also secured the Sunday Summer Series Championship in the division. Justin Ladue was the not only the 600 Modified feature winner but he too used the podium for the Sunday Summer Series title in the class.
John Williams was the Futures Sportsman race winner but it was Charlie Towner securing the Sunday Summer Series Championship. The Modified, Factory Stock and Four Cylinder Sunday Summer Series Championships will be decided this Sunday with the held-over Mike Colsten Remembered 51.
Daniel Morgiewicz and Bobby Hackel led the Modified field to the green for the 35 lap feature event. Both have been fast in recent outings with Hackel winning the most recent event, the 59th Heath Memorial on July 30th. At the drop of the green Morgiewicz vaulted into the race lead. He utilized the outside line around the quarter mile oval as Hackel drove the low side. The duo had a great side by side battle for the first five laps. At this time Dan Creeden joined the race for the lead as the trio used all lines to try and advance their spots. Creeden moved into second place on lap 8 as he and Morgiewicz now began their battle for the race lead. This allowed Hackel another shot at the race leaders as he remained loyal to the low line around the quarter mile. On lap 11 Creeden worked past Morgiewicz for the race lead as now Justin Holland started to apply pressure to Hackel for third.
Creeden quickly opened his race lead over Morgiewicz. Morgiewicz increased his lead over Hackel as he was engaged with a great battle with Holland for the third slot. As the laps clicked down Creeden had a sizeable lead over the field but had lapped traffic to navigate. The race remained caution free and on lap 27 Holland made his way past Hackel for third. Creeden cruised to the victory leading the balance of the event. Morgiewicz, saw his best FMP finish derailed as he pulled to the pits on the final lap. Holland moved up to second at the finish with Hackel third. Jimmy Zacharias finished fourth with Ken Titus claiming the fifth position.
Chris Clemens and Mike Nagel, Jr. led the Crate Sportsman field to green for their 25 lap feature event. Clemens led the first lap but Nagel took over on lap number 2. Many thought that once Nagel took over the lead that the race was settled. Fifth place starter Gordon Smith had other thoughts as he hustled up to second place on lap 6. Nagel and Smith had a great side by side battle for the race lead between laps 10 and 15 with Nagel securing his advantage at that point. Nagel would go on to lead the remainder of the feature and record the victory. The victory also made him the Sunday Summer Series Champion for the class. Smith wound up in second place with Tighe Sherlock driving from the 18th starting spot to third at the finish. Garrett Zacharias made his debut in the division and collected fourth with Dale Welty taking fifth at the stripe.
The 600 Modified division had their Sunday Summer Series Championship up for grabs on Sunday as well. Justin Ladue has been dominant all season long and again showed why he was the Spring and now Summer Series Champion. Ladue took the lead on lap 1 and most figured that would be how it would end. Brenton Payne had other ideas. Payne, fresh off a win on July 17th started eighth and used the outside of the quarter mile to take the race lead on lap 4. Payne looked like he would be tough to beat but a caution on lap 7 changed the complexity of the race. On the restart Ladue changed his line and applied the pressure to Payne. Ladue quickly retook the lead on lap 8 and he would never look back. Talan Oliver had a solid run to take the runner-up slot at the finish. Payne finished third after jumping the cushion and losing some positions. Nolan Smith and Bumps Scutt completed the top five.
John Williams made his debut for 2023 in the Futures Sportsman class and led wire to wire in the 25 lap feature. Charlie Towner applied the pressure throughout the feature and made several unsuccessful bids for the race lead. Williams made his first appearance count with the victory. Tom Davey made a late race charge to challenge Williams over the final few laps but was unable to make a winning pass thus settling for second. Towner, by finishing third, secured the Sunday Summer Series Championship. Matt Backus and Avery Decker completed the top five.
Tommy Groover looked to be on his way to a big payday in the 25 lap Factory Stock feature event only to have a flat tire end his great run with two laps remaining. Buck Mills, Jr. took over the point on lap 23 and led the final two laps to collect the win. Mahlon Shoemaker, Jason Beebe, Adam Gilbert and Justin Slezak completed the top five. The Factory Stock Sunday Summer Series title will be decided this Sunday.
Sean Mills looked to be on his way to the win in the FWD Four Cylinder 20 lap feature event. Mills led the first 16 laps by a big margin. A caution on lap 16 reset the field and Andy Bolles took advantage. Bolles worked past Mills on the very next lap to take the race lead and go on for the victory. Mills settled for second with Dave Simms, Brian Salmini and Chris Yob rounding out the top five finishers.
