Story By: FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY – KIRKWOOD, NY – Five Mile Point Speedway will host the annual National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship this Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
The multi-division event will be headlined by the Modifieds doing battle in a 40 lap feature paying $4,000 to win. The day of racing will serve as the second of three scheduled Fall Series events for all racing divisions.
It has been no secret that Five Mile Point Speedway faces an uncertain future. Last year at this time it was thought and expected the speedway was hosting the final race weekend ever. After extended zoning changes have been delayed with the final sale of the speedway, the track was opened for a limited schedule in 2023. The speedway which was built in 1951 will conclude the 73rd consecutive season of racing with two events; this Saturday and next Saturday, November 4th. This Saturday is the Modified finale. Next Saturday will see the Fall Series Finale headlined by “The Great Crate Race” for Sportsman along with vintage racing and all fall classes.
Last year after the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend, Justin Holland was thought to have been the final Modified race winner at the speedway. Back on September 30th Holland returned to victory lane with a big Modified win. He will hope to defend his race title in the event this Saturday. Teams from all over the northeast are expected to converge on Five Mile Point Speedway this Saturday. In the last event on September 30th, race teams from five different states were in competition. Since that event all of the schedule racing has fallen victim to rain.
This Saturday will see racing in the Modified, Crate Sportsman, Future Sportsman, Street Stocks Factory Stocks 600 Modifieds and Four Cylinders.
Racing begins at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday. Pit gates open at 11:00 a.m. with grandstand gates opening at 12 noon. Practice for the teams is at 1:00 p.m. with the Modified teams hitting the track at 3:30 p.m. for their practice rounds. As always, children 8 years old and younger are admitted free in the grandstand area when accompanied by an adult.
