Story By: KASEY KREIDER / LINDA’S SPEEDWAY – JONESTOWN, PA – The last race before the annual National Open at Linda’s Speedway always has a way of establishing the favorites for what is “The Crown Jewel of Micro Sprint Racing.”
Two drivers who are no strangers to Linda’s victory lane put themselves in the winner’s circle Friday night with hopes that they can do it again next Saturday and claim their first National Open triumphs.
40 Mt. Gretna Roller Rink 270 Micro Sprint entries came to Jonestown for the final tune-up before the 34th running of the 270 National Open. Time trials saw Cory Myers rocket his No. 20 to the top of the board, and it looked as if he could end up dominating the night.
Once the feature began, Pat Bealer grabbed the early lead from the outside pole, but pulled in under an early caution period, giving the lead back to Myers. The pilot from Fayetteville then went to war with Pete Skias as the two drivers battled fiercely for the lead.
But Myers’ car began blowing up just around the halfway mark, bottling up Skias behind him and allowing the third-place running Billy Logeman to snag the lead. The defending Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Race of Champions winner was uncontested once he got to the clean air all the way to the checkered flag.
The Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Wingless 600 Micro Sprints also put in an entertaining show on a hammer-down quarter-mile Friday night. After starting in 12th, 2023 points champion Richie Hartman sliced and diced his way through the pack, following Marty Brian through the field as they drove up to the top two positions.
Brian had a lead of over two seconds in hand, but crashed while trying to get inside of a lapped car entering turn 1. The Ephrata driver’s misfortune allowed Hartman to take the lead. Even though the engine of the Mark Gray-owned No. 39 began laying down over the last few laps, Hartman was able to just make it to the flag and hold off Steve Whary for the victory.
The ARDC Midgets contested their final race of the 2023 season in a rescheduled event at the Linda’s Speedway. Troy Betts looked to be the dominant car early in the night, but once Allentown’s Briggs Danner found the clean air early in the feature, he put an absolute clinic on the field. The No. 98 ripped around the quarter-mile at a torrid pace, and Danner took the checkers for the $1,000-to-win main event nearly a lap ahead of the entire field.
The Xcel 600 Modified Tour returned for their final race at Linda’s for 2023 in the annual topless event at the speedway. For the second year in a row, Kenny Harris claimed the victory, as he got around Tiffany Hitzler-Mays at the start and then held off Tiffany’s brother Richie to score the final Modified win at the quarter-mile for the year.
The Lebanon Valley races for both All Star and Junior Slingshots were originally rescheduled and on the docket for the evening, but were taken off the schedule as a result of conflicts with other big area races. Brett Bieber officially claimed his fifth Hoffer Paving All Star Slingshot championship at the speedway, while Chase Schott won his second title in the J&J Auto Body Junior Slingshots.
The Charger Championship Race, also originally scheduled for September 29th, is planned to be made up in 2024. With the points coming to an end in that division, Eric Hollenbach will claim his fifth points championship in the Bernheisel Race Components Chargers class.
The Stolz Stove Sales Winged 600 Micro Sprints also had their season come to an end as a result of the rainout that night. Ben Stolz will officially be crowned the champion of that class, scoring the title by just two points over Jason Sechrist.
The 34th Running of the Linda’s Speedway National Open kicks off Friday, October 20th with time trials, Wingless 600 Micro Sprint heat races, and the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Race of Champions. The action continues on Saturday, October 21st with 270 Micro Sprint heat races before the lower mains and, finally, the 40-lap A-Mains for National Open 34.
