Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – MIDDLETOWN, NY – Sunday at Orange County Fair Speedway was an all too familiar feeling for Stewart Friesen.
At the end of the Eastern States 2oo, the Sprakers, NY driver had his fourth consecutive second place finish in the event.
That was also after driving from last to second in the Last Chance Qualifier Sunday to just make the 200-lap event.
After starting 36th in the main event, Friesen’s runner-up finish was quite a remarkable effort for not having turned a lap on the speedway all weekend until Sunday afternoon.
“Some long runs in the middle of the race may have helped us,” Friesen said. “I don’t know how much duel he had left. I ran out going to the scales. We took just a little more when we pitted the second time.”
Even though it’s a good run and decent result, you could tell Friesen was disappointed.
“We’re just bummed out by the second,” he said. “We came and tested last week because we knew we wouldn’t be here the first two days. I’m happy with the podium finish, absolutely, but it’s not what we wanted.”
Still, Friesen knows there were positives.
“We made a lot of gains with the race car today,” he said. “That makes our team happy and now we’re looking forward to the rest of the year.”
