Story By: KASEY KREIDER / LINDA’S SPEEDWAY – JONESTOWN, PA – The 26th annual Kevin Gobrecht Memorial Race – now in its third year taking place at the Linda’s Speedway – has always served as one of the crown jewels of 270 micro sprint racing.
On Friday night in Jonestown, 53 cars came out to compete as part of the Mason Dixon 270 Racing Series and the Linda’s Speedway Mike Co Motorsports 270 Time Trial Series in honor of the local racing hero, the man commonly referred to as “The G-Man.”
In a field packed full of stars and 270 micro sprint racing royalty, it was Chambersburg’s Craig Myers who made a late-race pass on Ross Perchak in lapped traffic to pick up his first Linda’s Speedway win and second win in the Kevin Gobrecht Memorial, with the other one having come at the now-defunct Trail-Way Speedway.
Perchak appeared to be the class of the field for most of the night, as he was fastest overall in time trials and won his heat race to put him on the pole for the 25-lap A-Main. Once the feature started, Myers quickly moved past Lake Laughman and into second place, and he never let the No. 4 machine scamper too far away from him.
Myers being able to keep Perchak within an arm’s distance proved to be the key when the leaders hit lapped traffic. As Perchak was bottled up on the bottom, Myers blasted around the top of turns 1 and 2 and made the pass for the lead with six laps to go. Despite Perchak’s best efforts and one brief challenge into turn 3, he was unable to keep pace with the No. 20M carving through the lapped cars. After coming close on many occasions, tonight was finally the night for Myers to taste Linda’s Speedway triumph in a big way.
In addition to the 270s, the Stolz Stove Sales Winged 600 Micro Sprints were among the classes on the card of racing Friday night. Manheim’s Brent Shearer picked up his second win in three races. After a thrilling heat race drive that saw the No. 29 go from ninth to first in less than a lap, Shearer got past Chase Schott on a restart and then held off a hard-charging Jason Swavely to score the feature victory as well.
The Front Wheel Drive division returned for the second time this season, and it was dirt track racing newcomer Michael Wambold who made the winning pass on veteran Bill Sherwood coming to the white flag to claim his first win at Linda’s Speedway.
Wambold wasn’t the only first-time winner of the evening, as New Tripoli’s Hailey Eroh chalked up her first win on the quarter-mile in the J&J Auto Body Junior Slingshots feature.
And in the Junior Sprints event, it was once again Jase Smith piloting the No. 52 Storm Chassis into victory lane, keeping him a perfect three-for-three on the season at Linda’s Speedway.
Linda’s Speedway wraps up the month of May next Friday, May 31st, with the annual Jonestown Throwdown between the Chargers and Front Wheel Drive division highlighting the evening. The Mt. Gretna Roller Rink 270 Micro Sprints return as well but with a twist, as there will also be a Wingless 270 Micro Sprint event held in addition to the regular slate of winged racing. The Hoffer Paving All Star Slingshots and the return of the Midgets will round out another exciting card of family-affordable racing action.
