Story By: KASEY KREIDER / LINDA’S SPEEDWAY – JONESTOWN, PA – Racing at 73 years of age, don’t think for a second that Bill Sherwood – one of Linda’s Speedway’s most experienced and successful stock car drivers – is slowing down any time soon.
The native of Grantville, PA bested the combined field of the Front Wheel Drive class and the rear-wheel drive Chargers division to pick up the win of the 11th Jonestown Throwdown on Friday night.
During preliminary race action, it was actually Sherwood’s teammate, Ken Buck, who seemed to establish himself as the pre-race favorite. Buck beat Sherwood and Chris Warren in the “match races” to put himself on the pole position for the 20-lap A-Main event.
But Buck – who had been waiting over two decades to return to Linda’s Speedway’s winner’s circle – would have to wait just a little bit longer. On an early-race restart, Sherwood’s No. 11 thundered past Buck on the outside groove and moved into the lead.
Sherwood’s top combatant was defending Chargers champion Eric Hollenbach, as the Kimmel Racing entry stalked the tire tracks of Sherwood’s Front Wheel Drive machine, looking for a way around. Despite Hollenbach’s best attempts and a last-ditch effort into the final corner that saw the No. 711 go for a spin, he couldn’t find a way to pass Sherwood, as the 30-year Linda’s Speedway veteran claimed the victory in front of Buck and Shjon Dove.
The Mt. Gretna Roller Rink 270 Micro Sprints turned in a couple of thrillers on Friday night. In the regular winged feature, it was heartbreak for Dave Labe, as the native of Jonestown had a cylinder break with four laps remaining while in search of his first career 270 win. Labe’s misfortune opened the door for a vintage performance from Nick Skias, as the Wernersville native – who was fifth with five laps to go – passed both of the Boyer brothers on the final restart to score a meaningful victory behind the wheel of the No. 88.
For the first time in several years, Linda’s Speedway also hosted a Wingless 270 Micro Sprint event, which saw another exciting race between John Maurer and Brandon Heist. With three laps to go, the defending track champion pulled a slide job through turns 1 and 2 to swipe away the top spot, and Heist held onto the lead through a one-lap dash to claim the victory.
The Midgets made their season debut at the Linda’s Speedway, and it was Spring City, PA’s Zach Curtis emerging victorious in the Royalton Recycling No. 00.
In Hoffer Paving All Star Slingshot action, Brett Bieber – recently announced as Linda’s Speedway’s newest “Living Legend” – held off a hard charge from Chase Schott in a one-lap dash to the checkers en route to claiming his 201st Slingshot victory across all tracks.
Linda’s Speedway kicks off the month of June next Friday, June 7 with a Super National Race for the Hoffer Paving All Star Slingshots and the J&J Auto Body Junior Slingshots. The Mike Co Motorsports Time Trial Series returns for Mt. Gretna Roller Rink 270 Micro Sprint competitors. And the Stolz Stove Sales Winged 600 Micro Sprints along with the 125 Micro Sprints round out the racing card.
