Story By: JOHN SNYDER / ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY – MIDDLETOWN, NY – The Big Series headline Modified division format allows competitors several different engine-weight combinations.

Basic DIRTcar Modified rules will be in effect for all three race meets with the following options:

  • Big-Block DIRTcar engine rules, 2,500 lbs.
  • xSmall-Block W-16 engine, 2,350 lbs.
  • DIRTcar 358 Spec engine, 2,400 lbs.
  • DIRTcar Spec engine Option B, 2,450 lbs.
  • PA 358 engine, 2450 lbs.
  • All 358 engines Holley 650 or 750 carburetors, 5.57 gear rule, no rev boxes
  • All entries only Hoosier 300 or 400 Tires permitted

The first two races in the series will be DIRTcar sanctioned, allowing DIRTcar members to count these races towards their home track status. DIRTcar membership is not required to enter any The Big Series races. “We’re encouraging participation in the series by allowing Small-Block teams equalizing weight breaks,” said co-promoter Brett Hearn. “I think it adds to our program, giving teams and fans the chance to see, and maybe settle the age-old argument over Big-Block v. Small-Block competition.”

A point system will be in effect for all three races. A small point fund has been established for the Modified division, but more importantly, the top-three in points are guaranteed starters 7-8-9 in this October’s Eastern States 200. Other special awards will enhance the basic purses for the three races in the series.

“Our goal is to provide the fans with good and exciting racing and for the drivers and teams the opportunity to compete without the pressure of weekly or season-long series,” said Hearn. “Our first event, combined with Nostalgia Night, is a chance to celebrate the long tradition of racing at Orange County.”

The Big Series first race is set for Sunday, June 9 and marks the 105th year of auto racing in Middletown, New York. In addition to a full card of dirt track Modified, Sportsman, and Street Stock races, it’s also Doug Dulgarian’s 18th Annual Nostalgia Night, with race cars from the past on display as well as a large contingent of drivers returning to the track they helped make famous ready to greet fans, swap stories, and sign autographs.

Activities surrounding Nostalgia Night will open the June 9 program. Spectator and pit gates will open at 2:00 pm. Nostalgia Night driver autographs will take place between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Race cars will be on the track beginning approximately 5:00 pm. Following qualifying, the Modified feature will be held first.
