Story By AIRBORNE PARK SPEEDWAY – PLATTSBURGH, NY – Tim Fuller out-classed 25 other small-block modified drivers en route to Egglefield Ford Victory Lane at Airborne Park on Thursday, May 9th, kicking off a new era of racing in the North Country.
Adam Pierson and Fuller led the field to green for the 40-lap, $4,444-to-win contest. Fuller jumped out to the early lead on the outside lane while Pierson struggled to maintain his pace. Fourth place starter Carey Terrance quickly established himself as a contender, stalking fuller on the bottom, while Mike Mahaney and a hard-charging Felix Roy gave chase.
Mario Clair established himself around the halfway point, moving into the top-5 around the same time that Terrance retired from the event after an apparent mechanical failure forced him off the backstretch.
The race ended with a lengthy green-flag run that saw Fuller amass a near half-track advantage over Roy and Mahaney, who both fell into the clutches of Clair in the final circuits. Preston Forbes finished 5th.
In the J&S Steel Sportsman, polesitter Gabriel Cyr led the first several laps of the 30-lap, $1,200-to-win feature, but Donovan Lussier ran up to the lead from his 4th starting position and quickly gapped the field. He survived a handful of restarts to secure the win over Cyr. Fire Swamp, Nick Heywood and Travis Bruno completed the top-five.
Tylor Terry won the 9th State Cannabis Renegade feature after a spirited duel with Nate Guay. The race began with a scurry in the opening laps as Travis Stokes was contacted and spun in the first corner. Just behind him, Hunter Sawyer suffered a catastrophic drivetrain failure that filled the air with smoke and left his driveshaft sitting on the frontstretch. Guay and Terry were out front from then on, running several laps side-by-side in a great showing before Terry prevailed on the bottom. Guay held on for 2nd, while Josh Terry, Shawn Duquette and Zack Daniels rounded out the top-five.
The Moore Recycling Mini Stocks brought over 35 cars to the track for opening night, and Nick Harnden was the best of them all. He led every lap of the feature, holding off Rick Doner and Speedy Bresette in the closing laps. Steven Bresette and Ryan Senecal completed the top-five. The B-main was won by Josh Blake.
In Hoosier Racing Tire Limited Sportsman competition, Keith Pelkey walked away from the field to win the caution-free, 20-lap affair. Caleb Durgan finished 2nd with Parker Dermody in 3rd.
This Thursday night, all regular divisions will be back in action. The 9th State Cannabis Renegades will compete for a $500 winner’s share, accenting the night with full-fendered flare. There will also be a poster contest for the kids in the stands, so grab those markers and poster boards.
Racing begins at 7 p.m. with practice slated for 6:30 p.m. General admission is $15 for adults, kids under 12 are free. Pit admission is $28 for members and $38 for non-members.
