Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – MIDDLETOWN, NY – For only the second time in recent history (2020 Covid restricted year), the Orange County Fair Speedway remained quiet through the months of April and May.
But that all changed on Saturday, June 1st as OCFS held it’s first of two scheduled practice sessions prior to the Sunday, June 9th event, race #1 of OCFS’s The Big Series.
Even with many racers having made other Saturday commitments, there were still 44 cars in the pit area to take advantage of the track time available on a bright and sunny Saturday.
Co-promoters Brett Hearn and Doug Dulgarian were carefully monitoring the practice session and both were quite pleased at how the session turned out.
“Thrilled, we did everything that we needed to do,” Hearn said as the practice session was winding down. “There are very few tweaks that we have to make. Surface was great, drivers were raving about it. Dust was minimal. I’ve waited 3 years to do this.”
“I am very relieved and happy,” said Dulgarian. “It was a good test to figure everything out. The track sat dormant for so long, the lights and everything worked. One more practice Thursday night which we’ll probably see more race cars being a non racing night. And we’ll just hope for good weather for Sunday.
In the Modifieds/358’s, Charles Loiodice had the fastest lap of the day followed by Craig Mitchell, Brandon Daley, Will Dietz and Dylan Smith.
Unfortunate day for Street Stock driver Isaiah Guest as he suffered what looked to be a catastrophic engine failure. Isaiah and his team are a resilient group and they will bounce back strong.
A reminder that there’s another practice session scheduled for Thursday, June 6th with The Big Series Race #1 / Nostalgia Night happening on June 9th.
