RPW Exclusive: Empire Super Sprints CNY Speedweek Opens With Friesen In Victory Lane At Utica

Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – VERNON, NY – In an infrequent Sprint Car appearance, Stewart Friesen was Thursday’s winner in the 25 lap opening race of the Empire Super Sprints CNY Speedweeks at Utica-Rome Speedway. The race was part of the Bill Shea Memorial Night at Utica-Rome.
Racing the Glenn Styres GSR Racing Team car, Friesen took the lead for good just before halfway and sped to his 4th career CNY Speedweeks win, his first since 2015, which also happened at Utica-Rome.
“That was a blast. Thanks to Glenn and the whole GSR crew. They build their cars in house, and it’s just a great race car. Big thanks to those guys for towing it down here for us,” Friesen said.
Even though he started on the pole, it wasn’t all that easy for Friesen. After 2 failed attempts to get the race going, Friesen took the lead at the start and quickly opened up a 3+ second lead over Jordan Poirier. That advantage went away with a lap 6 caution.
Poirier took off on the restart, going to the lead over Friesen.
“I didn’t fire off real good on the bottom on the restarts.”
As the race closed in on halfway, Friesen was closing back in on Poirier when caution was out after 12 complete.
On the restart, it was Friesen back to the lead and it was one that he never gave back up. At the finish, it was Friesen on top over Poirier.
“I knew once he got past me it would be tough to get back by him,” Poirier said. “It just seems like we can’t buy one this year. So many seconds, hopefully in the next few days, we can win one.”
Danny Varin finished 3rd, never really in a position to challenge Friesen or Poirier.
It was tough tonight. With those guys on the front row, I knew it would be tough,” Varin said. “Hats off to both drivers there”
Billy VanInwegen finished 4th. A great race between Davie Franek and Joe Trenca went Franek’s way as he finished 5th with Trenca 6th. Jordan Thomas was 7th. Jason Barney recovered from an early incident to finish 8th, Chase Moran was 9th and Shawn Donath 10th.
Next up on the ESS CNY Speedweeks schedule will be Friday, July 5th at Brewerton Speedway. Fulton Speedway then Weedsport Speedway wraps up the 2024 version of Speedweeks.
