Story By: MICHAEL BENJAMIN / NY PENN IMCA MODIFIED SERIES – SUSQUEHANNA, PA – The day set up to be a great one. Sun was shining, the air temperature was hot, and the pits at Penn Can Speedway were filled.
With about 70 cars signed in for the days events. 14 of them were the NY/PENN IMCA Modified Series who were on hand to race in celebration of a friend and fellow competitor KC Cole in the first Annual KC Cole Memorial.
Heats fired off first and set the tone for the nights events as Eddie Sites found his way to the point in heat one, followed by eventual feature winner Rodney Morgan in second. Heat 2 saw Brad Sites taking the checkers after the 8 laps around Penn Can Speedway followed by Rich Michael Jr in second. All four drivers would find
themselves in the KC Cole Dash 4 Cash race for an extra $124. That 4 lap dash would be won by heat number 2 winner Brad Sites.
When the features hit the track the atmosphere was different than the day. Sun was down temperature was cooler, but the track was still hot. When the green flag would drop we would see veteran Shawn Bruce jump out to the early lead. Followed by Rich Michael Jr and Eddie Sites. Bruce would hold the lead for 17 laps until he would bring out the caution in turn 3 and 4. That would give the lead to points leader and last week’s series winner Eddie Sites the lead. With Rodney Morgan to his outside on the restart. Morgan would slip back to third and Brad Sites would move up to second place. The whole race the top 4 would be battling for
the top spot but Eddie Sites in the Benjamin Racing 5s would hold the spot. Coming to 2 laps to go Morgan would find himself in front of Brad Sites for second. Eddie would take the white flag and going into turn on Morgan would hit the high side and with Eddie Sites bobble coming through turn two, would get by E. Sites for the lead and come out with the KC Cole Memorial win followed by Eddie Sites in second, Brad Sites, Rich Michael Jr, and Tyler Stoddard rounding out the top 5. Jacob McConnell would score the Force Flow Pressure Service Hard Charger coming from the 13th starting spot to finish 6th.
The NY/Penn IMCA Modified Series will travel to Bloomsburg Fairgrounds Speedway next on Thursday, June 8th, 2023. This race is always highly-anticipated as it always brings good racing action for the IMCA Modifieds.
